I have a Trane gas forced air furnace in my garage. I keep it at 60 all the time, it’s really nice and I’m very fortunate to have that set up. I do keep it on the warm side cause not only do I have the Mach 1 in there, but I also have my embroidery shop in there too. So with the electronic stuff and the embroidery machines I keep it pretty warm. I used to use electric heaters but in the winter they were very expensive, can’t imagine how much it would cost now. I even put a thermostat in that I can control with my phone. My garage is detached from the house so it really nice to be able to turn heat up or down from in the house. Not really sure how much it cost per month but it is way cheaper than electric. But like others have said you have to go with what is available and practical for your situation.
Half the garage is insulated.

It costs ~$100 extra a month for me to cool the garage

On heat if it gets too cold the unit I have can’t operate due to the temperature delta

If it is that cold I start the propane bullet heater

One easy solution, depending on what you are doing, is the old halogen 500w worklights. Basically another infrared heater. Working under the car? Put it under and point it at the parts you are working on about half an hour before you want to start. I did this outside doing a clutch on a 20 degree F day. Didn't need gloves as all the metal got plenty warm.
If you're in the garage, same thing. Two additional benefits: plenty of light and if you wear anything black, you will warm up nicely, too.

Wasn’t my first rodeo, so I went with hydronic heat in the slab. No dust, no and it self regulates humidity. I run the mini boiler on off peak elec which makes it very reasonable in cost. It stays around 60-65f all winter. On the coldest days, -22 or so the room temp drops to about 58f. Very happy with it up here in the north. It heats the area I work in, down by the floor and not over cooking the ceiling.
Use to have a modine that hung from the ceiling. That garage was a tad smaller but at 1400sf. It was toasty. Some noise and did create a bit more dust.
There’s a guy I know in White bear lake that will blow in foam insulation into finished walls. That said he needs and access hole of about 3 in dia for the access point. A buddy did it to his house and it worked phenomenal, plus acts as a sound deadener (sp).

I built my separate garage when I built my house and it is well insulated. I added a boiler and have radiant heat in the floor. No noise and always warm. Really nice when you laying under the car doing work.

I'm impressed with some of the garages you all have. I'm blessed to have a small two car garage I can squeeze my two classic Mustangs and motorcycles into. Always have to shuffle vehicles and equipment around to work on something, though.

I have been saving for years to finally build mine. It’s 50’x56’ with 16’ ceiling height. Still not quite done yet. Gotta build the loft over the 1st bay still. But I did get my home spray booth built and my 2 post lift in. All built by myself, my boys, and couple buddies. Only think I paid labor on was spray foam and concrete. Here’s a few misc pics.

We build our house 21 years ago with the garage as part of the house 60x60 garage with 60x40 for storing the cars and 60x20 for the workshop keep the dirt where it belongs. Radiant heat in the work shop and forced air high boy in the storage to keep the air moving with industrial fans on both sides for air movement and put the air lines under the floor with a sound proof compressor room so not to be heard in the house. One of the best thing we have ever done.

Not to go off topic but can you expand on what you did, which brand, how much work was it, how efficient is it?
It's a Lennox system. Work was pretty easy - all of the ductwork is exposed, and the inside exchanger is mounted on the wall, so no lost floorspace.
