1971 NOS pop open gas cap

Didn't realize how prices have shot up on these. Perkins (yeah I know he is high) has one on ebay for $450. Yes It's nice but.....

I picked up a nice used one with good chrome and no pitting on ebay last year for $65 and restored it. You can still find nice used examples if you're not in a hurry to get one. If you want a NOS one you'll have to pay the price, though.

I paid 10 bucks for mine!! Used, but in pretty good condition and it looks to be original to the car at 50.

Prior owner installed a 71 pop open cap on our 73 before we acquired. Got lucky. Nice to have. Our 73 vert has regular pony cap. Nice looking but I prefer pop open.

There is a decent looking used one on eBay for $85.00, it needs to be refurbished but looks like it would clean up okay after some polish and paint. It looks better than mine did before I restored it.

You are absolutely correct masking those fake rivets was not fun. That's probably why the previous owner painted them gray also.

$450 bucks, from a historic perspective, given the scarcity today, really ain't too bad... The last Ford retail back in the early-mid 1990's was $166.88, which adjusted for inflation, would be +/- $350 bucks today. And that was when they were readily available through any Ford dealer or Mustang parts supplier. AND... Those were the compromised ones, with the plunger and spring removed and a twist-on cap included.

So decades later, with only so many true NOS extant, $450 doesn't shock me in the least. Could be much worse.

Nothing wrong with reproduction parts if original aren't available. Finding, preserving or restoring original parts is satisfying but if you're building a concours restoration NOS parts can make all the difference.
