71 Mach1 painting

The car is going back light pewter, and black on the bottom. Need some insights on how the black is done in the door jambs and on and around the rear panel.

Meeting with paint guy tomorrow. Please help.

I copied this exactly as I saw it from a 71 Mach I restored a few years ago. No stripes but bottom treatment.

I used SEM hot rod black single stage for the black. The rest is ppg base coat clear coat.

I would do a little black paint around the gas cap area too, similar to the taillight areas too...

On the original 71 I restored, there was no paint in that area.
But if you’re not worried about originality, it would help hide the color underneath cap.

So your car originally had that area painted black? That’s interesting. The yellow mach1 I did was an original paint 43,000 mile car. I wonder why they would paint some cars in that area but not others. Any ideas?

When I did mine (here in Canada) I was unable to find a match for the original code (V) due to the different paints and paint laws we have here. I hope you don't encounter a similar problem. What my painter did was to have the local auto paint supplier, use a computer camera for the want of a better term, to read the color from an area under the rear back window valance that had never been exposed to sunlight. However, the paint type he chose resulted in a slightly amber appearance, but that said, I've had many positive comments on the color, so it is what it is.
I hope you get a satisfying match, it will look awesome for sure.
Oh, if you do the hood blackout, there are many post here on that subject. Mine is wrong at the front and that was on me for not making sure the painter included the hood trim piece. Ooops!

Someone on the boards may have this paint call-out image. When painting the hood, the underside area at the back edge, is painted anti-glare black as well, so that when the rear of the hood is viewed from inside the car, body color is only visable on the top of the hood, and the underside blends in to the dark cowl area. As I said, I don't have the image , but I think it extends approximately 6" or so from the back edge, forward. My car was painted this way, as well as the "black-outs" around the gas cap and inboard of the tail lights.

Paint code is available here, dude just left $5 do $7.5k base coat, clear with painted on rear stripe and mach1 lettering. Car getting dropped of in April.

OK, just found the image of the underhood "blackout".....as well as my tongue- in -cheek customization of my used hood prior to paint.

The blackout was definitely in three places. My 71 had it, but I don't have any pics of that part of the car.

Wow. Now it really makes me wonder why this car was missing paint at the gas cap.
