73 Convertible exhaust system fitment question

If it fits 65-70, it *should* fit a 71-73 - unless - you have staggered rear shocks (for '73, they would only be on a Q-code 351-4V car). Many moons ago, the only way to get dual exhaust for a 71-73 was to use 70 components.

No one in the Miami area does custom exhaust?
 
Hello, I am looking to put on a Pypes dual exhaust system. I emailed them about fitment for a vert since all of the 1973 ones said non vert and was told that that the have 65-70 kits might fit.
Is there a difference between 65-73 cars suspensions and floor boards?

71-73 convertibles have reinforcement plates on the underside of the driverside and passenger side these two plates are also connected together by another plate that passes over the driveshaft and tunnel. The factory pipe are bent to pass thru the tunnel and over the plate. This limits the size of the mid-pipe to 2 1/2". It is my understanding that 3" pipes will not fit thru this tunnel space.

Interesting, I never thought about the tight fit through there. I have the same set up and need 3” for the flow. I am guessing i will have to use a spacer on the plate to drop it 1/2” to create some space. Thanks for bring this up.
 
Get a local exhaust shop to custom build and install one for you. I tried the pipes kit and hated it. Some people have good luck with it but I didn’t care for it. I had a local exhaust shop in stall dual 2.5” stainless from headers back for around $700. Includes x pipe, and flowmaster fx mufflers.

I installed the 2 1/4" kit from CJ Pony with stock 2v exhaust manifolds in my 71 Mach1. I also used Hush Thrush turbo mufflers. It was a very good fit. The idle is a bit loud (which I like) and they are very quiet at speed. I can always add resonators to the tailpipes later.
 
Fyi, I bought the NPD 2 inch kit and it fit, barely….but works well…
 
I sprayed the exhaust pipes and stock exhaust manifolds with Rust-Oleum Specialty High Heat Ultra Semi-Gloss Silver Spray Paint which is rated at 1200 degrees F. It was less than $12.00 a can at Home Depot.
I am interested to see how it holds up. So far so good.
 
I bought one of these for my 71 vert. Not installed yet. I also dunno why the listing is only up to 72. It seems to be very high quality. I bought pypes 3 inch to 2.5 inch. I really am going to need 3 inch all the way but not sure how easily it can be done. That's a very cool part, but a bit pricey. I did not know that Tinman made such a part. Why does it say it fits model years from 1965 to 72 convertibles? Why not 1973 Convertibles too?

I do not understand what might be different from 72 to 73. I only have a 71 vert. I also parted out a very early 71 vert as well. The plates are the same.
