looking for a factory am /fm radio to fit in my 73. what other years and models will fit

Depends on what you want to change.  Early radios had a 3-pin molded connector for the speakers, later radios had a different connector.  So you may need to change some wiring too depending on what you get.  You would want the later radios.  Do you have the factory installed speakers in the doors?  If you don't (and don't have power windows) you will need a wiring harness from the radio to the door jamb, the rubber bellows/hoses from the door jamb to the door, and the additional wiring.

The harness for the door speakers is sometimes hard to find for sure. I have posted info for the speakers and wiring.
I have no luck doing a search but not savy at computers at 73. Some of the later AM/FM had front and rear speakers 71 - 73 mustang only had the door speakers. Should be pretty easy to find.

I'll just throw this into the ring. My 71 Mach 1 only had an AM radio, therefore only the in dash single speaker. At some point, a PO had installed an aftermarket whatever and added friggin big speakers in the parcel shelf, but fortunately, not cutting the steel support. In the area I live, there is only 1 AM station I can pick up and it plays, ahmm, country music. I was fortunate to find a 73 AM/FM factory Mustang radio, well fortunate that I found it, unfortunate that the guy who sold it to me assured me it had been professionally serviced for which I paid the price, when it proved it had not even been opened. Long story short, I did have it totally rebuilt and all in all it cost me around 500 bucks Cdn. Then I had to deal with all the friggin wires the PO had cut the plugs off instead of simply splicing in. For speakers, I bought the dual in dash speaker that NPD sells. I then built a new parcel shelf using 1/8" hardboard. I bought a pair of 4" round speakers and mounted them on the underside of the hardboard with some mesh material glued over the hole. These fitted neatly into the factory holes in the steel so no damage to the car. I then covered the finished shelf with some utility black felt like carpet I bought at the local auto store. Installed, the speakers don't show and all the wiring was run along the rockers under the carpet, totally out of sight. Now, I'm not into big sound systems, I just want the radio for some good ol' Rock-n-Roll. If I want big sound, I roll down the windows and listen to my Flowmaster FlowFX mufflers.

I managed to find this radio off FB Marketplace. I believe its out of a mid-late 70's Ford, and while it took a little wiring and trimming the radio bezel, I think it looks pretty stock. For wiring it wasnt a big problem since I was putting door speakers back in the car since the door panels were previously cut for them and then they had been removed. Otherwise I just trimmed the top of the bezel a little bit. I probably could have gotten away without it, but I think it looks better with it trimmed.

you can find a correct radio and have it internally changed to accept USB, Bluetooth, rca etc.   I did this with my two AMC cars when I had them in the early 2000s.  This way it looks 100% stock but offers so much more utility.

You got me hunting online for some bluetooth receiver boards now. I think I may give it a try adding in bluetooth to this AM/FM radio I put in. And if I manage to do it and it works ok I am trying to get a couple and may try and do the same for the radio in my brothers '60 Thunderbird.

Another old thread that might offer some ideas.  Tons of old Ford radios will fit our cars but they are not all 'correct'  - if that matters to you.

can had the factory am/8track with door speakers. it did not work, so i replaced it a aftermarket am/fm, dont care for it.

I can check and see what brand this is if anyone is interested.  This was already installed on my car when I purchased it.  Retro looking radio with USB, Bluetooth, RCA, etc.  This is the only picture I have at this time.

it was a retrosound, forget which model. royal pain to install. its a radio, thats all i can say about it. when you drive car when its cold outside, i turn radio on, leave volume down to let radio warm up, so the readout works. that being said i had factory late model radio do the same thing, but its at zero or below. when i replace radio, its going in the junk pile or give it to someone. but most of the time i dont turn it on, dont like it.

The doors had been cut a bit, so I wound up putting in some 5x7's and did some custom grills for them. I feel like it looks like it would be stock, even though the speakers behind everything are bigger than they would be from the dealer.
