I'm changing out my master cylinder and don't want it to look

like a rusty lump!

I'm concerned about just rattle canning it and having brake fluid

taking it off strait away.

Thoughts/Experiences?

TIA

Paul

pretty much that will happen, you can paint it with bare metal gray but the dot 3/4/5.1 will slowly remove it, you can touch it up etc.

another option is use a product like rust away on it. wipe it down then oil the surface with silicon spray or wd-40.

as an example of using rust free; this is not a convertor it is a muriatic acid that chemically eats oxidized metal, and removes it leaving the unrusted metal behind.

before:

rust free, spray, soak, wipe.

Gibbs lubricant(similar to wd-40)

hit it a couple more times after

done:

I've used rust away type products on tons of things and had good results.

it takes patience but I've restored some stuff to new and even managed to keep most of the original paint and factory markings on parts just removing rust. I've also saved some very rusted chrome parts, using a soaked micro mesh cloth with the rust free product working it into the surface cleaning up with alcohol and then lubricating the surface.

72Hcode has it correct. However if your top cover gasket is tight and your port connections are tight, it can look good for a very long time. I painted my 73 vert with Seymour Cast Blast followed by a light satin clear coat 20 years ago. It still looks fine. And that includes several 3-4 year system flushes using Dot 3/4.

I have also had good luck just spraying the master cylinder with Eastwood diamond clear. You just have to be very careful not to spill on the exterior. Had my master cylinder look like new for years. And as suggested, if it starts to show a little rust, clean it and touch it up.

I painted mine with spray can Truck Bed Liner from Wal mart, been wet with brake fluid several times and looks just as good and the day I did it. The spray can liner seemed a lot thinner and just looks like paint.
