C4 Filter Screen

Does anyone happen to know if the filter screen gasket of a C4 transmission is necessary? I see various parts sites with some showing them and some without. My 71' didn't have a gasket when I removed the filter screen after dropping the pan. If it is supposed to I would like to put it back together correctly. Also, is the vacuum line from the transmission supposed to just go into the tree at the back of the manifold?

Yes to both. The filter keeps debris out of the valve body passages and acts as a baffle for the fluid in the pan. The hose from the vacuum modulator on the transmission connects to a manifold vacuum source, usually the tree you mention.
