Crime and punishment

Today I discovered my enclosed race car trailer had been stolen from storage. Thankfully no car inside but, it was full of furniture. I don't think I have an ice cube's chance in hell of getting it back. Which leads me to express my opinion that I feel corporal punishment should be brought back. It is inexpensive, no incarceration cost, and it is actual punishment, not to be forgotten. Please share your opinions on the matter. Chuck

Well......without punishment there is no deterent. Our Legal System is rotten. From where I sit, there's laws on the books, and punishments available to the courts, but most police officer's hands are tied with lots of restrictions. Further, the Courts, in my opinion, are too lineant, afraid to make meaningfull decisions, and Lawyers......the Woke......the P.C. virtous.......a victimized law abiding citizen can't get a break. Wrong doers on both sides rarely get what they deserve. We live in a strange time, no?

Chuck - I am sorry to hear about the trailer and the furniture. Yes, our legal system is not working (rotten) and the idea that applied social justices and rehabilitation will deter criminal activity is ridiculously flawed. There continues to be a push for legislation to decrease any real punishment for non-violent and property crime offenses. Of course they are considered victimless crimes..... right? I bet you have an opinion on if your a real victim.

Spike's post is spot on. Adding to the problem is the sting that the trailer and contents are long gone and the realization that you probably won't get your property back. Even in states like Oklahoma and Texas, the criminals are winning. And the courts are flooded with logjammed dockets and criminal defense attorneys who actively subvert the CJ system with needless filings and continuances. Yes, strange times indeed.

Spike, This is the third time I've had significant value things stolen from me. They were not food, clothing, medicine, or shelter items. They were all resale for profit things. I have nothing left in terms of compassion or understanding for thieves. We, as a nation, have lost our collective minds when it comes to crime and punishment.

Gangs that sell it often involved in shootings. Smash and grab robberies are common. People living in tents along the freeway and on sidewalks are everywhere. The police have been restricted on what they can do, prosecutors ignore many cases and judges release dangerous people. Crime and murder are at all time high. This is true in many cities across the country. The stupidity is unbelievable.

Couldn't agree more, cjstaci. We cashed out a little over a year ago and got out of there. We saw zero evidence that anything was going to pull Seattle out of its nose dive and figured we'd leave before the inevitable housing crash.

And the death penalty i'd like changed to. if u are found guilty and NO if's, and's or but"s u DID it. u have 6 months to challenge that and if u lose u get the needle. PERIOD !!!!!!

You were smart to leave pnwmach1. I am a field supervisor for Metro Transit and we deal with much of this on the buses. This has been going on for years. I meet with the deputies and city police almost daily, they are fed up. I have one more year then I am retiring to LasCruces NM. Everyone I talk to is planning to leave the area. I agree with jscott, 9mm! I would add 5.56 and 12ga to the scenario.

Sad reality. Add to that the juveniles that go around stealing a few cars every night. Even after they get caught, they get slapped in the hands and let go. The first thing they do after being let go is steal another car - or break on another garage/home. Plenty people out there saying that these kids should get a second chance, but obviously that's not working well for society. These kids won't stop after getting caught. I think that gives them more of an adrenaline rush and they do it again.

In the not so distant past, society didn't tolerate criminal behavior. They had public executions and everyone watching thought "Don't want that to happen to me". They made those guilty of lesser crimes break rocks in the hot sun, or build roads for the greater good. Now we worry about whether little Johnny was spanked too much as a child, and not the person he victimized. As a result, our prisons are full, our streets in big cities are like third world countries and we are afraid to go out at night. Until we as a society rise up and say enough is enough, we'll continue to have high taxes, high crime and reduced quality of life. Just my senior citizen, unenlightened thoughts.

You know the scary truth is we are talking about real, legitimate problems and issues. Not just some old dudes (me) on a rant.

And, I honestly don't know how we get back to decency and goodness without many more years of the same or worse. Maybe not in my lifetime??? I feel bad for my children and grand children and the world they are inheriting from our generation. And, the really stupid part of all of this is this country's leadership actually embraces the chaos and fear, how do you overcome that nonsense? All of our systems are broken. No matter what our political views might be, it's easy to see that hate and violence is real. We no longer hold people accountable for "their" actions, we look to blame others.

I've seen it up close and personal for the last 35 years, and it's shocking to say but Law Enforcement's hands are tied and the profession has been so gutted that people don't trust the good guys anymore. I'm not big city, but even in a smaller community of 300K, our homicide rate since 2019 has skyrocketed. We had 42 homicides in 2020, 32 in 2021, and we are on pace for another big number this year. That's just in little ol' Lubbock, Texas.

I don't go anywhere unarmed, sometimes I have more than one option available and I don't think I'm an extremists or irrational in my thought process. It is what it is, but my family is going to be safe if I'm anywhere near them.

There are devices available that can be used to like GPS to track something. The first was Lojack, decades ago. Hide it somewhere, and activate it when theft occurs. Thieves won't expect it on an old car, or a trailer or equipment. Might be more satisfying to find where the thief goes, than wait for over worked police to try to find it. The places that resell stolen goods need to be busted.

Definitely with all we can complain it is far worse in other places. I grew up in a country where you were prepared to be robbed. You leave your house with the minimum in your wallet, but not too little so they don't get pissed when you get rob. You drive a POS car. Your life didn't mean anything to them so it was better to let them get away with something otherwise you will end up dead. And this was back in the 80s. I was robbed once in my car but they didn't take the car because they didn't know how to drive manual. They took my wallet, keys, sweater and shoes, but I got out without a scratch.
Now it is worst and the biggest fear is to be kidnapped. If you haven't heard of it, the thing that started 15-20 years ago is the express kidnapping. The goal is to hold you up for a few hours so they ask your family for a "reasonable" amount that can be a few thousand dollars. Unreal stuff that at least we don't have to worry in most of the USA - for now.
I will hate the USA to be like that, but very slowly we can get that bad. Politics are making things worse, no matter which side of the isle you rule for. It is scary to think what the future will bring so I just don't think much about it.

Sorry they got your trailer and property Chuck. As others have mentioned we have alot of things to fear and protect these days. I don't have or know the answer other than plan for the worse and hope for the best.

As many of the other seniors on this site, my father was a WWll vet. I grew up in a world where you didn't talk back to your parents, and if you did you only did it once. We address our peers as Mr. and Mrs. and open doors and gave up our seats for the opposite ***. We had winners and losers, and losers didn't get trophies. We were taught right from wrong, and when we did wrong there was a price to pay by either a belt or some other form of punishment. The police were you friend and knew a lot of us by names but at the same time if you broke the law, they didn't hesitate to arrest you or take you to your parents to pay the price. There were only two sexes and we never heard anyone complain about it. Yes, we were republicans and democrats, but we were Americans first. We respected the flag and what it stood for.

I blame the bulk of today's problems on the lack of parenting and social media. We have become of society where we pacify our kids with electronic devices and are no longer involved in their everyday life. We have lost control over them and they are now being schooled by others like them and in a school system that is bent on indoctrination of *** and racism. We are letting those with their own agenda (cancel culture, woke, crt, blm,) run the country and dictate their terms to our politicians and private businesses. It's just a matter of time before the next generation will realize just how screwed over they got by those so call experts and those that supported these movements. Hopefully it won't be too late to save this once great country. Sorry for the rant but can't help it.
