My Car
71 mach 1
Hello gentlemen,
I hit 140mph in my 71 the other day and I got to wandering what is the fastest top speed you guys have pushed your machines to. I know 140 is no big deal. It would be cool to see a 71-73 built for speed. Mine is a mild 429 with 3.0 gears and a c6. Probably tops out at 5500 rpm. What top speeds have you guys hit and what modifications if any did you make?

Hasn't someone loaded his car onto a plane for a cross-country or cross-ocean flight? There, the speeds would be around 650 mph!
Good 1 ML!
My ragtop at 120 is enuff for me on a short stretch of Interstate here in WI. She wants to keep pulling but with no “feel on the wheel” it’s time to stop being a dumber ass.

I agree. Steering feel gets downright spooky. I took my XJS v12 to 140 with finger tips only on the wheel. Not anymore. My 73 302 would be lucky to hit 100.

This is common theme. The power steering feel is definitely of the one finger on the wheel overassisted type. It is fitting for a Lincoln but it is not confidence inspiring on a mustang at speed.

What is an XJS a jaguar?
Love v12s only drove one once on track in Las Vegas. It was an Aston Martin. Driving a NA engine that revs to 9000rpm is amazing

Aston Martins do not have north American engines if I'm reading you right.
Earlier Aston's used Jaguar engines up to 2005, then switched to Merc and are still using Merc engines, the M117 I believe.
The XJS Jaguar was from 1975 to I think 1996. That was one beautiful engine, but a bi*ch to keep tuned.

I think he meant normally aspirated (NA). ;)

Thanks, for that information.. it would be cool to do a build around an engine like that. That is a special niche I don’t know much about.

I have rarely tried to hit triple digits in our pony cars (69 Shelby GT500 with pure stock 428 CJ and 3.0:1 rear gears, 73 Mach 1 built for Street/Strip with a moderately built 351W (not C)backed by an AOD and 3.5:1 rear gears, 1973 Mustang Convertible 302 2v & 2.79:1 rear gears. amd finally a 2020 Shelby GT500. All of the pony cars re capable of hitting triple digits, but on the Convertible it really is not designed to do that. The 73 Mach 1 and 69 GT500 definitely have the power to get deeper than 100, but I have not pushed them out thqt far, just because I have nothing to prove. As for the 2020 GT500, well, 'nuff said. 140 MPH for that beast is child's play. I have been up to 145 MPH on a track (not ever on public streets), and it was still pulling. I did not see the point of keeping in it for the 180 limited top speed (electronic governor). It was smooth and stable at 145, I had not a single sorry. It is the fastest car I have ever owned or driven, by far. On the public streets I do not race around, as no matter which car I am in I have absolutely nothing to prove to anyone.

Yeah , I have driven the gt500 on track. It give you that feeling of unlimited power like a Ferrari. Amazing amazing machine. I had a Zl1 Camaro which is not as fast as the gt500 but it was still capable of insane speeds but I sold it because I thought I was going to get myself into serious trouble. Kind of miss that car.
It was really something.
You have the right attitude ,
There is nothing to prove, that’s not why I posed the question. That 69 Shelby is a unique car
Kind of predates the 71 Mustang
With some similar sheet metal right? I guess I didn’t realize the 429 check was available in any form in 1969. I know the has boss 429s and 429s in nascar taladega torinos.
