Fiberglass fan shroud clean up...

I am looking to properly clean up my original fiberglass fan shroud that sustained some abuse in its lifetime... I am in the midst of repairing a crack/breakage that so far is going well.

The next phase is trying to clean up the mess as seen in the picture, appears to be the remnants of a battery blow up that also caused extensive damage to the original inner engine bay panel where the battery sits as well as the hood area around the battery. Fortunately, I was able to properly correct the hood issue as the gunk did not reach the metal... and I replaced the damaged panel with an NOS unit. All that is left to address is this shroud, which is very rare and expensive if you can find one.

I don't want to have to paint it... was hoping someone had experience with cleaning fiberglass to try and return it to its previous factory state?

There is no damage in the areas where the overflow of the battery made contact, just a mess.

Thoughts?

I have used this on a lot of stuff in the past including non-gel coated fiberglass and it works very well.

Try 0000 steel wool. Chuck

For both fiberglass like heater box, fan shroud and plastic like the splash shields under the front fenders I use walnut shells and low pressure in blast cabinet. You don't want to remove material just clean it. Also wash really good with Dawn to get any oil off. If the look is still not right I put Satin clear on. The pic is some inner fender shields I did recently.

BTW the yellow under the fenders on this car is original never painted. They gave under the fenders a much heavier coat than most I have seen. No paint on any of the bolts, brake lines or suspension.

Thanks for the thoughts. Chuck, steel wool was not strong enough. Wound up using some strong scour type pads and old fashion back and forth hand movement muscle... spent a few hours and it came off. Will post a pic later. Thanks
