My Car
1973 mustang convertible(some day)
So I go to take off my wheels to remove the front suspension and i find every nut is a locking key type that the PO put on. PO said the key was with the car but is wasn't. Has anyone every seen this type of key. It seems pretty uniform in pattern. That or does anyone have any experience with some of the kits out their.

Thanks Jim

Hi Jim,

I had the same problem when I bought my car...no key. What I did and it worked great was...I took a deep socket that was a tight fit on the outside of the wheel lock...hammered it on and took an impact to spin the lock off. Worked on all four wheels.

Yup probably the easiest and fastest way to get them off. I usually use an impact socket because of the thick wall so it doesn't split. Done it that way many times with no issues.

Jeff,

The only problem is that there are 20 of them to do, not 4. BTW are you entering a car next week?

Jim,

It will still work if you can't find the key even with all twenty of them. An impact deep socket will be best as mentioned so it does not break. Good luck.

My car is in pieces so will just be down to browse and meet all the guys next weekend. We need to all meet up somewhere on Saturday for a beer.

Jeff,

I'll only be there for a few hours. From like 10 to 1. My wife doesn't want to spend that long so I was going to see if I could get a ride from Mike as he is putting his 89 in. Then meet my wife around 12:30 to go do some date stuff. Hopefully we can still meet up.

Btw, are you doing your body and paint yourself.?

Wow thats messed someone really thought those things would stop a skilled thief. Maybe slow em down a bit. Sorry to hear its that many you have to remove.

Google "wheel lock removal kit"

for something like:

Maybe try your local AutoZone, Advance or tire sales/installation (Sears, NTB, etc.) type of stores for a rental kit. Kits basically are tapered sockets that pound onto the nut, then impact them off.

The lug nuts shown on your car are called "spline drive". They're all the rage with the Import Tuner crowd...

I found that a 17mm six side deep socket fit perfect. I managed to get one wheel off. Had to stop but I'll pick it up tomorrow. Also, it's a garrela brand lug nut so if I get stuck I'll call them and see if I can get a new key.

Thanks everyone for their inputs.

Those look like 'tuner lug nuts' something kids put on their Fast and Furious cars. They also look like 'Gorilla' brand, take a look at you local auto parts store, I but you can find a set and use the wrench that comes with them, I have a spare if you can't find one.

Some of the tire shops around here have an assortment of keys in case the owners have lost theirs. You might ask around.

Ditto, my car didn't come with the lug key either, called Les Schwab Tires down the road, they told me bring the car in they would get them off no problem, not sure what they used but in 5 minutes they had all four off, didn't even charge me.
