OK all, I have a question about my 71 MACH 1's interior color. The Marti report states it was Ginger, simple enough. The previous owner had cobbed together the inter components and re-sprayed everything to be black. Now I am working on getting it back to ginger.

The issue is that the aftermarket Ginger colors of the seats, door panels and roof liner seem to be light ginger and the aftermarket dyes and paints (to refinish some items) are available in either "dark" ginger or "med" ginger. So the question remains how does one mix and match correctly to achieve the right color? and what was the original color to begin with, "med" or "dark" ginger?

Simply put: if you are going to paint anything in the car Ginger color, use Dark Ginger paint. The Medium is way too light for anything. It may look lighter in some areas, but the basic parts, dash frame, dash pad, "A" pillar moldings, console, etc. are to be Dark Ginger. Curiously, some original parts were a bit lighter than the Dark Ginger (for instance the original finish on the deluxe door panel pull handles are a tad lighter than the Dark Ginger paint, but too dark to be painted Medium Ginger) but Medium Ginger is way too light of a shade. Of course the aftermarket pieces you referred too will not be an exact color match to the originals. If you compare a set of original door panels (with the textured vinyl covering) to the cheap repros (yes, even the so-called concours correct or more expensive versions) the repros are overall a lighter shade. The originals are simply a more rich mix of Med. and Dark ginger (the textured spots of Medium and Dark mixed). Again, no matter what, your interior will not show a consistent brown shade on every part. And to further complicate things, different vendors for different parts have a slightly different shades.

I learned that lesson the hard way. :dodgy: I shoulda painted it all dark ginger, but some kook told me that some of the parts were med. ginger and others were dark ginger. It is way too much contrast. Right now I have my trim all dark and my panels medium. Thats another project for this season - repainting.

Thanks guys! this is a huge help. Was going to go the dark ginger route initially, but now you have confirmed it!

I am restoring a 73 Mustang convertible with ginger deluxe interior. I have been able to find interior spray dye/paint to match the ginger dash, console, kick panels, etc. I used a Med. Ginger spray dye/paint with good matching results, BUT I have not been able to find a Ginger color light enough to match the plastic rear quarters, which are lighter in color than the dash and console etc. It looks like Ford used a lighter ginger color on the rear quarters and seat back panels to better match the vinyl seat material, windlace and door panels. The plastic seat back panels are also the same lighter ginger again to match the seat material that surrounds them. The med. ginger dye/paint I used to paint the dash and console is too dark for these panels, as you can see in the attached picture. I have tried three different brands of medium ginger dyes (AccuMatch, Rainbow, Omni-Pak Lacquer) and none of them match these panels and needless to say the dark Ginger is even darker. All the Mustang parts suppliers have for 71-73 is dark and medium ginger. Has anyone found the right lighter ginger dye to match their 71-73 rear quarters and seat back panels? Thanks in advance for your help.

Geez, I wish I knew some of this before changing the interior from ginger over to black. I did not like how the original ginger in my 71 faded, so i changed it all over to black- which is ok, but I do like the look of the medium ginger.
