Proform HEI distributor

I just had an interesting offer for an HEI Proform distributor for my 351C.

I use the original Ford distributor with points. Do you think this can be a good upgrade ? Any feedback about this Proform distributor ? (I heard some good and bad things about them)

My Stang is a GT so I have an integrated tach, I wonder if I'll need to add an external tach or if it is compatible with the original one.

I've got the same one... They do the job... I even bought one of those big hei dizzies to see if they are any better and the car performed no differently. This gave me some piece of mind. After much stuffing around trying to tune the engine as optimally as possible considering my big cam, low vacuum, etc, I ended up running at about 16 deg advanced and running the dizzy off full ported vacuum. This way I don't go over the 36deg total adv. I've been happy with this setup for a little while now. It's probably the best compromise between power and drivability for my setup...

you can probably keep your stock tach but you will have to get a msd tach adapter to make it work. thats what i did with mine and tach works good

out of curiosity, what is different about the factory tachs to an aftermarket? Since I was using an autometer, wiring it up was just a matter of connecting one wire.

the old tachs were run off the points (hot side of coil) and the new ones are run off the neg side of coil. there was a thread on this somewhere on here that explains the differences. i will see if i can find it later. I beleive its all about how the tach gets triggered. One is voltage triggered and the other is current triggered. New style voltage triggered by neg side of coil and old style is current triggered off of pos side of coil. Heres a link to the msd tach adapter instructions. hope this helps a little!
