speed sensor?

I have a 73 mach h code with a bad speedometer cable bought a new one from cj, car does not have cruise, went to change it and found this ford part # d2af-9e731 looked it up on google said its a speed sensor new cable will not hook up to it and I cant find the correct cable anywhere. do I have to have this? what will happen if left off? is it part of cruise control?
