only clearance issue is on the front on the upper control arm, tie rods, and a little of tire rub on the inner fender

What size did you end up going with?

the tire and rim size are 275/40r17 on 17 x 8.5 rims

yeah i have realized that many modern wheels have trouble with the upper control arm. My crappy wheels (98 v6 rims and tires 15'') that i picked up cheap just to have something on the car while i work on it rub at the upper ball joint. So either i will have to use a 1/4inch spacer for now but i will need to find a different offset wheel to work.

Not sure it is the wheels.

I have the origin 14" wheels for my sons XR7. They no longer fit after redoing the front end. Don't know what we could have done to change the geometry of the parts.

WHAT IS THE OFFSET?

Your wheel offset should be as close to 0 as possible.
