Thermostat At Block - Cleanup

Here is a photo of the water neck area of my engine block where the thermostat goes.

Any ideas on how best to clean up this area?

Best (and least intrusive) is the C-L-R calcium lime and rust remover. I know how gentle you like to be.

I'm thinking tape off the opening...Fine wire wheel on a drill to start then finish with a Dremel and a fine wire wheel

+1 then vacuum/magnet/wipe the debris out.
