So I got a new dipstick and tune for the c6. It is a different length than my original one. Which one do I believe?

Dip stick ID#'s for 71-72 C6 are D1AP-7A020-AB or D1OP-7A020-AB (part # D1AZ-7A020-A). The tube doesn't have any ID #'s stamped on it but is identified by a yellow daub and is approximately 18 3/64" long. 
Install the tube. Run the dipstick down the outside of the tube. The correct fluid level is about where the pan meets the case. If the dipstick full mark does not match that level, scribe a new full mark in the correct location.

This works for C6 and FMX transmissions which are what I have personal experience with. I don't know specifically about the AOD but I would not expect it to be any different. If you want to know for sure I would post your question on the Network54 Ford Transmission Forum or the Silver Fox trans forum.
