SALVAGED TITLE ***** SALVAGED TITLE
I have a 71 mach1 351-4v car that was chased off the road by the mailman. Right side slid (slammed) into ditch bank almost parallel at approx 25-30mph. Looking at it you couldn’t tell anything was wrong. As they say… looks are deceiving. Here’s what I was told: Oil and trans pans leak. Frame bent. Problem with right door opening. Gas tank seeping. And more, just couldn’t write fast enough. Ok to drive around the block but not down the road. Here’s what I know: Surprisingly tracks straight but steering wheel is misaligned. Intermittent rubbing noise from rear. This was a driver car with some original and some repop.
Insurance estimated $28k to fix.
So, either a parts car or maybe someone with more mechanical skills than me (I have none) would want to fix?
I know I’m supposed to put a price up but I have no idea… I could use some help with that.

Whas it your car before the crash, which you bought back from insurance even though you can't fix it?

Yep. Very clean. The only damage i can tell is the bend at the rocker behind the passenger front tire.

Hard to put a value on it without seeing the damaged parts. There is a ton of good parts there, though. If it can't be fixed, i'd say probably worth $9k as parts. As with most totaled/parts cars, yau can get more if you take the time and effort to part it out.

Bent frame is a gamble. If somebody is wanting to buy it to straighten out and drive. You may or may not be able to get it back right. It could be you get it close, but it'll never quite be perfect and it'll just kinda be annoying.

Willing to bet the $28k estimate was the "don't wanna do it" price. Bent frame can mean a lot of things, from a dented floor support, to a damaged engine bay crossmember, to an actual bent frame rail. If you like the car, find another shop, preferably one that's familiar with early Mustangs.

Post some pics of the damage and the underside.

Looking at the pics, the only frame damage I see is that the crossmember under the engine is bent backwards. This is a very commonly damaged part and to be honest, it looks like it's been like that for quite a while. If that damage had happened in this incident, your oil pan would be in much worse condition. I've also seen, and driven, cars with that crossmember in worse shape and on one car, torched out. I also don't see any indicators of recent impacts anywhere on the suspension components or the floor pans.

My 900 mile away opinion - whomever looked at this car was didn't know what they were doing. You could have a guy porta-power the crossmember back forward away from the steering. I'd replace the tie rod assemblies just to make sure they're not damaged, and have the car aligned. Replace the fuel tank as it may have a pinhole and check for the exhaust rubbing on something.

Looks like the tab for the driver's side camber adjustment is flattened out a bit and paint looks recently scratched. I know this very well, because it is identical on my car, which was also totaled and rebuilt. :D

It happens when the car is in some sort of impact where the bottom of the wheel is forced outwards with a lot of force. It pulls the cam bolt so hard, it flattens out the little wing. You can bang it back into place with a hammer and a chisle. How's your front crossmember look? There are strut rods going from your lower control arm and they mount to a cross member. When your lower control arm gets yanked on so hard it screws up your alignment and bends parts like it did, it can also damage that front crossmember.

On my car, I'm running the total control front suspension package. You get a lot more adjustments than the stock setup. You can compensate for a certain degree of your frame being out of spec. From the pictures, yours doesn't look that bad. So far, we're up to having a crossmember replaced, tie rods, fixing the camber pin, and an alignment.

Probably wouldn't be a bad idea to rebuild the entire front end. If something yanked on the lower control arm hard enough for it to flatten that wing, then there's a good chance something related to the control arms or ball joints is also fubar. Good news is all those parts are relatively cheap.

EDIT:

Looks like damage to the oil pan here. The gas tank and one muffler show what look like scrape marks from bottoming out. You would need to take a look at the hangers and mounts to make sure those aren't about to fall off. You say the gas tank is leaking. It may just be the sending unit or gasket, which is mounted pretty low on the driver's side. Look for evidence of where the tank is leaking to decide if it needs a new tank or just a new sending unit/gasket.

This is the section of the rocker that doesnt look right. Somehow the rocker and door appear to line up with each other. But the fender is not in line with them. There is a big difference if its just a damaged fender or if the body/rocker/floor is somehow askew.
