I think I figured out how 2 post pics..70 Amp D3OF 10300 AA.JPG70 Amp Plug.JPG

NOT THE GREATEST PICS BUT HERE THEY R ANYWAYS..

Thanks for the pics...that is the correct 73 part number and looks to be original. Looking more like the rear defrost was the determining factor.

Maybe Steve knows, if you got the heavy duty alt did you also get the group 27 heavy duty battery?

Thanks for the photos 3k73! That alternator is the same as the one I have. My Marti does not show a heavy duty battery either. For the most part, it does appear that the rear defrost option would get you a 70 amp alternator (except for Manu's car!)

Steve,

I have an 70 amp alternator too - the same as yours! My car came original with the rear defrost window but no other higher electrical options...

I had a 55 amp Motorcraft voltage regulator with yellow letters in there too - is that the original regulator for this setting? I thought this one is for the cars with A/C - but there are no higher values out there...

Should I take the same as a repro from Don for the 70 amp setting or which one would you recommend?

Thanks,

Tim

The Alternator build sheet code on my 73 "L" code Convertible is:

4G

Build date:

4/09/73

Only optional power impacts may be the convertible top, AM/FM and console clock.

Here is a picture of my alt connections, but it is not the original alternator. I may have the original in a box; I'll see if I can find it.

My new '72 (build date 6/72, IIRC - very late unit) has a non-original 100-amp alternator, but it has an original side-mount 70-amp wiring harness which it's connected to...

...and it has rear defrost.

Marti in a week or two.

I know it’s a old thread but I believe that I have the original alt for my 73 302 auto base vert w/o ac, the bolt snapped so I changed it but kept the old to clean up as it was working. My grandfather changed the carpet so no telling what’s become of the build sheet. Here is a picture, let me know if there’s anything else I can look at for you besides the build sheet. My grandma was the original owner and I have a box of records I can go through, just let me know 🤙
Oh, no color? Maybe a very old rebuild?B36A8C1E-6CFB-4FB4-AEE2-672BC0F0CE27.jpeg

The chart pictured from my 1973 Ford dealer car facts organizer provides alternator info. Electric rear defrost in 73 was higher wattage (draws more amps) than 71/72, so that is probably why 73s have can have 70amp alts and prior year not.
