Just what I thought..but any record of the early casting dates...H is August right?
I would have to guess that the foundry would have started casting blocks and heads in May or June in order for the pipeline to be full of engines to support building cars mid-July.
Great info, but this is still an early casting, right. Have several blocks 2 and 4 boltet, but this is the "oldest" Cleveland I have seen. Thanks for information.Correct, H = Aug so that block was cast on Aug 19 1969. The papers I have show D0AE-A, C,E,G,J,L all with two rear drain holes ( see pic of a J code I had) All these were designated as 1970 blocks, but cast earlier. Those same casting designations also show up for 1971, with the exception of J, so the date code is the deciding factor. 71 blocks had the drain hole crudely cast in the front of the valley and the rear holes removed.
So there may have been blocks cast way before your Aug block.
I don't know for sure, just a guess, but A through G could have been early development (prototype) blocks. J is the earliest I've seen too. Some other members will have far more knowledge on this.Great info, but this is still an early casting, right. Have several blocks 2 and 4 boltet, but this is the "oldest" Cleveland I have seen. Lookede for a vin or parts of it..but non found.Probably a question Kevin Marti could answer if he can find the first 70 Mustang serial# with a 351C. Figure the block build date would be around 20-30 days before that...
Is there a readable vin stamping on yours?
