Hi guys,

Everyone ok?

My plan in the future, is to swap the C6 auto for a five speed manual transmission.

We can find some Ford five speed here, that came in the F-100 pickups.

Same bellhousing pattern as the 302 and 351.

The question is:

you guys that made this change, are happy?

What increase in final speed you got?

And in agility, in quick response of the car?

Does it lower the RPM in the road for real, as we want?

Hi!

What is the model number for the 5 speed? I assume it is an overdrive unit? If it is, it will lower your RPM for the same speed. We can calculate that based on the over drive value. You also will get a few hundred RPM's since the C6 is an auto and the torque converter slips a little.

We can also calculate your maximum speed if you provide your maximum engine RPM, rear end ratio and tire diameter.

I'm happy with it in my 73. It's very difficult to get a good shifter that works with an auto floor console so keep that in mind. I bought a whole bunch of shifter handles from summit until I found one I liked "OK" though none were ideal.

With the T5 in mine I'm cruising around 1900 RPM at 70 MPH, but this all depends on the final gear ratio in the trans, and the rear end you're running.

Ford trucks of more recent build used some Mazda 5 speeds and some others that weren't typically used in cars. Shifter hook up, transmission tunnel clearance and clutch hook up will all be different and require fabrication. Try and find a car for your donor unit.

i cruise at 70mph at 2100rpms and thats with a 25.7 inch street tire, 3.70 rear cogs with the 5th .64 OD. freakin awesome.

i did the whole kit from www.moderndriveline.com but i wish i had the room to do the www.americanpowertrain.com hydraulic kit. with so many motor pulls, i just don't see the room in there unless i went to a u joint instead of a rag joint which takes up the extra space in there.

X still cofused on the space problem:huh: Nothing is even near the rag joint

I also ordered my kit from Modern Driveline. I knew Bruce when he lived in California. He Us very easy to work with and he has everything. Conversion kits, clutch pedals, transmissions, shifters, flywheels, clutches (factory and custom).

I went with the Tremec TKO-600 on my '68 coupe and I like it a lot. I am actually planning in doing this for my '73 Mach as well. Maybe even the T-56.

As for lowering the rpm's, It certainly will. The C6 third gear is a 1:1 ratio (and it slips). The 5-speed 5th gear is going to be in the neighborhood if .68:1.

I bought mine from Keisler Engineering, who now makes their own updated version of the T-45 that is lighter than the tko 500 or 600, fits in our cars without cutting the tunnel, has a deeper first gear and a .68 overdrive and you can get everything in one place at a very competitive price.

They have been great to work with.

But I think the OP is looking to put together his own conversion from locally available parts.

I put the T5 in mine. I think there is a lot more work to do converting from auto to manual (mine had a three speed) The best thing about it in my opinion is that I am now getting around 24 MPG on the highway- I had been getting about 18 before and back when leaded gas was avialble the car might get 20.
