I see that a lot.

Just like many think if they have a 302 in any Mustang it must be a Boss 302, or all Mustangs are Mach 1's.

Maybe -- they found a 429CJ from another car (Torino, Cyclone, Mustang or Ranchero) and dropped it in a 72 Mustang...

But most likely a T-bird or big car motor.

They did a nice job with the restoration. I personally think the price is a little too high but that's just me. The part that irritates me the most about that car is the side stripes and the chrome lower body molding combination.

The bright lower moldings on 72s is something that our "detectives" could look into for us. I'm curious because I had a 72 Mach 1 (in 1977) that did not come with the hockey stick stripes and did not have the bright lower moldings. Was this a 1971 to 1972 production change?

Yea the Decor Group was not available on Mach 1 I don't think just sportsroof, vert and coupe. Might not even be a Mach 1 it is a lot of trouble to install the studs to hold the side trim + drilling the holes at the ends.
My 72 is a Mach 1(05, 63R) and has the bright trim like this car. I don't see anything on the Marti that indicates a decor group. Do you think the trim was added later?

Bright lower trim was standard unless you ordered stripes on the 71-72 Mach 1s. No sane human would add the trim, IMO.

Nothing about the pics says to me it's not a Mach, nicely optioned, but who knows....

I agree with hemikiller, no one in their right mind would add lower molding to a car that didn't have it originally. PITA to put the studs on. If your car was ordered from the factory with side stripes, you would not have gotten the lower molding but if no side stripes were ordered, then you would've gotten the chrome molding.

I have a 71 and a 72 Mach 1 with the lower aluminum bright trim

Just this morning I was browsing the local craigslist and came across 2 different posts advertising a so-called 429 SCJ or CJ.

One is for an entire engine and while it doesn't list any casting numbers, there is a picture with a valve cover removed...non-adjustable stamped rockers and no guide plates, so we know that's not a SCJ. $3000

The next is for a car with CJ heads listing a partial casting number "Dov-A". The engine block is reported to have an identical "Dov-A" casting number, or "markings", as put by the seller. If the seller meant the block casting number was D0VE-A, then possibly the block is a CJ, but certainly not CJ heads with that number. Maybe I'm a skeptic, but I'd bet a 6-pack that this one's not a CJ either.

I like Tommy's post...don't let the facts stand in the way of a good story...haha

From what I understand, no sportsroofs ever received the Décor Group lower body black or argent paint or side stripes.

Decor Group was only available for the Hardtop and Convertible.

I guess this one is the extremely rare single '72 that made it out of the factory with a 429 CJ installed, before Ford was aware of the updated emissions requirements. hehe Regardless of whether or not the engine is an actual 429 CJ, depending on the quality of the restoration it would be a fun car for $10K less. Even if it's really a 429 Thunderjet or something else, it's not a bad platform for having some fun. Never saw those 429 finned aluminum valve covers painted blue like that, unless it's just some kind of reflection. Someone with a big home equity line will buy it at that price without realizing the 429 wasn't available after '71.
