Can you post pics of what you removed? I guess I’m not sure what the speedometer cluster is. If you pulled apart one of the two harness connectors that are very close to the steering column, that would do it.
 
If you have a factory tach in the dash, then disconnecting it will cause the car to start when cranking but stop when you remove the key to RUN. If this is the case, simply jumper the male and female pins from the underdash harness, bypassing the tach itself.
