There are douchebags in each category.

Just because you do your own work, and have thorough knowlege of your vehicle, doesn't mean you are a great guy.

And there are plenty of great guys who simply buy the car thy always wanted. These guys may or may not be subject matter experts. Eitehr way, some will be great guys, others may be tools.

IMO, there are some "know it alls" in category 1 who, one way or another, will be irritating.

Great post.

I'm squarely in category 1.5

I've paid to have work done on my car

I've redone almost all of the work I paid to have done :(

I enjoy wrenching, but I hate bodywork and paint

I know most of the things I should about my car and my build and usually just limit myself to the broad strokes when people ask unless they ask detailed questions.

If you are having fun-great-if you aren't change your attitude.

I occasionally head to a free cruise in, but if I have to wash and shine my car to do so, then it isn't worth it.

But don't discount the cat 2 guys. One of my good friends fits in that category and he can drive the wheels off of his porsche Cayman (yeah he blew his engine last month and it is a Porsche and now he'll spend as much as the car cost him in the first place (about 25K) and he'll still have a 300 horsepower car at best, but with that 300 hp he'll run around a track pulling 1.2 g and outrunning Z06's and GT3's.

Not all of us are mechanically inclined, and some who are don't enjoy it. iT IS ABOUT USING YOUR TIME TO MAKE YOU HAPPY.

I think I'm a 1.75, I bought the car I wanted that needed work and restored it slowly doing as much of the work I could myself and paying others who had the skills and equipment in areas I didn't. Even if I have others do work on it, I research what needs to be done and how it should be done, heck that might make me 1.60???

Jim

No kudo points should be deducted for jobs needing specialised equipment!

Eg, rebuild Saginaw, pumpkin, etc

Otherwise it makes most of us look bad! He he

Those who work as mechanics or own similar business are also ineligible! They can have a 2+ instead...

Just my humble opinion... there are just as many douchebags in category #1 as in #2. I've only attended a few shows, haven't done any cruise-ins. I don't think the shows are for me. I do like to get my car out and talk about it, but I'd rather look at other folks cars. I really enjoyed the 50th Celebration at Charlotte. Lots of really cool people. I have experienced some Mustang Snobs at a local show. I felt a little bit like Rodney Dangerfield. Me... I bought what I consider to be a decent driver that I could afford. My goal is to do all the work myself, but I try to be realistic. I don't have the time, room or tools (or skills) to do some things. I got my pinion ring and seal replaced at a local tranny shop. I would not have attempted that. I'm lucky to have a few local shops that I would trust to work on my car. I'm not a know it all, really can't stand folks like that. They always have to one up everyone also. I don't really know where I fit into these 2 categories. I believe it is hard to throw 'most' people into any category. Bottom line... I love my car...

I think Kit's original post points out that, in general, people who tinker tend to know what they are talking about. And there is a larger proportion of people who spout off a bunch BS in the second category.

I would have to agree for the most part.

But it isn't black and white. It's a lot like gun collectors. I've seen people with Huge collections who were clueless about the real facts, and have met countless people who really knew what they were talking about, but owned maybe 1 or 2 guns.

And in each group, there were great guys and d-bags...

Life is like a box of chocolates...

Idiots were put here on earth as a frame of reference to make the rest of us feel good about ourselves!

Another pet peeve of me is when someone introduces you to someone and they practically break your hand shaking it!

I instantly analyse this as a cry for help! (Help me, I'm gay and stuck in the closet, or help me, I've got a very small penis and I don't wan't anyone to know)

He he .... Is it just me? Maybe I'm just lazy and can't be bothered putting the energy into it? Whatever......?

Luke, I'm very open to opinions! Just ask the wife of 23 years and she'll knock both on the head! Ouch, Pun intended. Hehe

PS, what happened to Greg, (Austen Vert) ... He's been very quiet lately?

I think the real problem is the person who wants you to admire THEM for having the car they have. This usually means they dumped a bunch of money to puff themselves up. Typically they do not have the time work on their car (even if they wanted to), since their schedule is already filled with ego maintenance.

Very gently played there Jim.I would of accepted a bit of a savaging for that stupid smart arse comment, guess you now have 1 in the bank :D. Greg was asking about respraying his car about 2 days ago was wondering the same before that.

All cool bud, forums like these is to have a bit of fun ... (Without wasting too much of Rocketfoots harddisk space, of course)

But I am seriously thinking of subscribing to an open religious forum without too many rules!

There I'll tear 'em all apart with my diabolical Vulcan logic! Hehe

That must be the most poetic, accurate and philosophical thing I have ever read on this forum.

Can I make that my signature?

You are my hero!

:)

Idiots in general dont bother me...the world is chock full of them. It's a particular type of idiot I don't like: thekind that don't realize what an idiot they are yet keep on flapping thier gums about something stupid.

Case in point: one of my employee's wife has had a boob job and the local idiot said: "paying for them yourself is a waste of money. You should have just got a job at Hooters...because they pay for your boob job after a year of emplyment. Its right in the employee hsndbook."

????

He is an idiot.
