I was preparing to drill some holes for my speaker wire boots and was wondering if anyone had tried a greenlee punch instead of removing the doors to drill in the boot holes. Maybe I'm over complicating things but I worry that realigning my doors may be difficult so I'm trying to understand if there is a simple way to make these boot holes without removing the doors,.

Greenlee punches work great for larger holes, I have a couple of them. You still have to drill a pilot hole, though. A step tapered drill bit isn't any longer than the pilot bit would have to be. I think the pilot hole needs to be 5/16" or 3/8", been a long time since I used them.

I think for a pilot hole I may be able to fit a right angle bit driver with a stubby bit. I need to look and measure. I like the idea just using a Greenlee. Glad to hear the thickness doesn't appear to be problem of the metal.
