My Car
1973 mach 1
Hi Guys,

First post for me.

I have a bit of a dilemma.

Earlier this year I helped a close family member import a 1973 mach 1 to Victoria, Australia.

It finally arrived a few weeks ago. This was to be his pride and joy however due to ill health he no longer will be able to fulfill his dream and work on this car. I have since been given the task of selling this car in the near future.

My problem is this. As the car currently sits in my garage my wife has started to fall in love with this car. I too have developed a soft spot for it as it just looks tuff from all angles.

I know have to decide whether I spend a few grand on this car and keep it or resist my wifes passion and sell it.

These cars are very rare in Australia and I will be relying on the web to get most of my information.

It would be very handy to have some other 73 models to look at closely to get some information however even mustang shows over here they are mainly full of 66-70 models.

The car would need a few things done if I was to keep it.

From the list below what do you guys think?

Its mainly the trim that worries me.

I would want the trim removed if I was to repaint the car.

I am hoping its all available or can be re-used.

I would just love to see some similar models up close so I can get a good idea of what the trim is like in perfect condition.

The car seems to have had a restoration but quite a while ago.

I have performed a partial restoration on a car last year so I have a little bit of experience, just not much with old muscle cars.

Good points about the car.

1.interior is in excellent condition for its age.

2. engine looks 100% stock

3. Has magnum 500 wheels

4. has rear and front spoilers fitted.

5. I have a brand new dynacorn nasa hood with scoops and inserts all ready to go on the car as it came with a standard hood.

6. The body looks very straight and does not have one dint on it.

7. From what I can see the floors are all original and the trunk floor looks solid.

Bad points about the car.

1. Has a original 302 instead of a 351

2. Although paint was done a while ago and is in good condition there are areas that are not 100% so I would want to repaint the car.

3. There is some rust around the edges of the rear tail lights.Someone has tried to repair but very poorly done. I think I can get the rear infill as one peice to fix this but have no idea whats involved in doing so.

4. The car was originally blue but is now white although during the last restoration they have gone to great lengths as the only way i could see the old colour was to scrape away the black chassis paint from under the car

5.Around the windscreen trim and chrome gutter trim some one has filled the edges with some windscreen sealant and every time water gets on the car the black shit just runs everywhere. I scraped some away and it looks clean underneath so I have no idea why they did this.

So what do you think?

Welcome from Bendigo ::welcome::

First piece of advice: don't sell it

Second piece of advice: DON'T SELL IT !!!!

You're right, not many 71/73's here in Oz. The 65 to 70 owners here don't seem to like our model much, but I can attest to the truth when I tell you the general public don't seem to share the same dislike. The first day I drove mine here (on permit and still wearing California state plates) a young bloke with long hair walking along the footpath stopped, knelt down on one knee and started bowing in an exaggerated "we are not worthy" manner as I drove past. I'm always getting thumbs up from people in other cars and I've lost count how many times I've seen people pass me on the road with their phone camera's pointing in my direction taking pics of the car.

Upload some pics so we can see what you've got.

Hi ,

Welcome from the Netherlands.

+1 on Brett's opinion "Don't Sell it" !! , if the car is as good as you wrote in your message "go for it".

Thanks Guys,

I can understand why people would look at these cars.

If they are fully decked out in mach 1 trim with the spoilers and blacked out nasa hood and good wheels they look tuff.

In plain trim they are not as appealing.

I have only had this car 3 days and when i was cleaning it all up today (after being at sea for 3 months and through quarantine steam clean the car was filthy when I got it) the neighbours across the road couldnt help but come over and have a look.

They could not believe the size of the hood and quarter panels.

My wife likes the roof line where the rear windscreen sits nearly flat. Not very good for rear vision while driving but very attractive from the outside.

So can I assume that where i mention rear taillight panel that that is not too difficult a job to do.

Can I also assume that being a 302 that it is not the end of the world.

It still sounds great with the dual exhaust.

Maybe also if someone has some close up pictures of the trim around the windscreen and side gutter rails for me that would be great and will help a lot.

Welcome

Post some pics.

Take a good look underneath to make sure the rust hasn't developed in the subframes.

No issues with the 302. Lots of parts available and can be made to be good strong motors.

If I lived in Austrailia and had one of these cars there is no way I would let it go.

Welcome from Arkansas (USA)

1. you can't sell it if the wife likes it

2. your a member of this forum now so you have all the info you will ever need

To answer a couple questions...The 302 can be built to hold it's own. you have to remember that a 351C is a small block too.

The tail light panel is not a difficult task (if you can weld) just take a lot of measurements before you do any cutting.

Any project you do will have someone on this forum who can walk you through it step by step.

It sounds like your wife has her car picked out, now you need one. I can ship my white 72 Mach out of Long Beach to you--it has the 351 you are hoping for... I need the space!

Sounds like it was meant to be! We'd all love to see some pics if your able.

Post pics and you will get the benefit of the board's wisdom...they can really help! Also, if you want to look at a bunch of pics for these cars try mustangattitude.com or look at the members pics on this site.

Welcome to the site and sorry to hear of your friend's poor health. I'm sure he would like to see you restore the car in his honor! Hopefully he would be well enough to cheer you on.

I'm sure this site has all the information and inspiration you will need to complete the restoration. There are a lot of good photos here and usually you will get a quick response when asking a question.

If you are interested im making more HP the boys at CHI can get Jon Kaase heads for the 302. OR, you can go old school and study up on the Clevor conversion where the 351c heads were installed on the 302 windsor block. Over here it was called the Boss302 in 1969 & 70. Would certainly be a standout among the Falcon crowd.

Thanks for all your kind words.

I will post some pics very soon.

I am also getting my panel beater to have a look this week to get his opinion on repaint.

They say happy wife happy life but what about my bank balance.

Welcome to the forum from San Diego,CA

I have to say this is interesting cause I used to know a guy on myspace that was in australia that had one, though I forget what state/part of australia he was in...I have heard of a few others over there but I didn't realize they were as rare as all that.

But anyway, from your description it sounds like a pretty good project car (especially if you're wife likes it,lol).

And really if you can either get parts for it in your country or maybe afford to import/ship from the US if you have to. I would definitely say keep it.

Also I'm completely guessing at this, but given the falcons (that you guys have over there) from around the same time look very similar to our cars you might want to look into seeing if there are any shared/similar parts there, cause while I don't really know I would think getting parts for aussie-specific cars like that would be a relatively easy.

Just out of curiosity what are the first couple of digits of the vin?

I'd say enjoy the car!

Welcome to the forum from Ontario Canada.
Your probably thinking the same thing I am. Mach1 with a flat hood is pretty uncommon.

I am about 2/3rds the way through a complete resteration on my 73 mach 1. Feel free to PM me for information or advice!

Best of luck!
