Does anyone know if the 1971 hurst shifter in the Boss 351 was labeled “Hurst” or “Hurst Competition Plus” on the side. I’m getting contradicting input from supposed experts and would just like to know the truth. Thanks

There is lots of conflicting info on this. I had this one rebuilt for my other 71 Mustang, I am not sure if its original application, I only know it was in a box with some 70 Mustang parts...

Have you tried posting the question on the Boss Forum https://www.boss302.com/smf/, or contacting Bob Perkins directly? The forum on MCA is finally back up too.. It would be nice to know. I have a Boss 351, but I've never looked at the shifter that close.

While not from a 1971 Boss, this is a factory Ford shifter from my at the time 1972 R code 351c HO. I removed this shifter when the car was only a few months from brand new to replace it with a Hurst Super Shifter. The Orange is Rustoleum floor pan over spray from 50+ years ago.

None of the aftermarket Hurst shifters I've had were equipped with the bracket for the unique back light switch,
as shown in the picture from mjlan. Hurst provided a separate bracket for their own switch.

Bill, I think the answer to your question is simply - "yes". It could be either. Maybe a talk with the Shifter Doc might be in order?

I dug out some shifters out in the garage. First pic is a 72/73 Torino shifter -

This is from a '70 Mustang or Cougar - cad plated body, no blue paint.

I believe this is also a 1970 model year shifter, bought it off marketplace. Handle is stamped 7275, cad plated body, blue paint, D0 stamped rods.

This is supposed to be original from a 72 Ranchero. Interesting it has both patent numbers. Any of you know if that has any significance or is an identifying feature?

Edit: Just noticed mine doesn't have the tab for reverse lamp switch....I'm thinking this is aftermarket. Hmmmmm

Thanks guys, great pics and data, very helpful. 3831 and 7275 shifter arms are VERY close in shape and based on the number (7275) and the shape of the arms it seems I’ve got a ‘70 model, which is a step up from the aftermarket unit that’s on my car. I’ll need to rechrome the shift lever and it should be presentable.

Thanks for the assistance guys!
