My Car
1971 Mustang Mach 1, M code, 4 speed.
I'm refurbishing a Ford Thompson PS pump for a friend that he will be using on a 460 motor. The pump itself is no problem as I see it before stripping. I'm not expecting any major issues in that regard.
However, I think the car this came off had AC and the pump pulley on it is only 4 1/2" O/D. As I'm not at all familiar with 429/460 motors, can someone with knowledge of the proper pulley sizes and numbers, please let me know if possible. I do know this car will have electric fans, but will still need the correct w/pump pulley. Also, what was pump mount bracket used on these. Was it the same as on a 351C? As said, this is an area I'm not familiar with, so please don't beat me up for asking!!
All help and suggestions welcome.
Thanks.

On my 1969 429, the pulley is 4.5" diameter. For the PS pump brackets, it looks like 2 or 3 of them. Similar design as the ones on the 351C. With one bracket that holds the pump itself and then a mostly flat bracket that mounts to the water pump and has a slotted hole that allows for adjustment and to tighten the belt. The bracket that holds the pump on mine looks like it is cast aluminum and the flat piece is the black steel. There appears to be a thin stamped sheet metal piece on the back side where it attaches to the driver's side cylinder head.

Thank you. That looks pretty much the same as the one I'm working with. I think the one I have here, came off a T bird, but I'm not sure.
The PH tube support bracket and the plastic clip are the same.
Does your car have AC? Any chance you can get the diameter of the water pump and crank pulley's for me........ please?
I'll take some pics later and get a number off the bracket, it's too damn cold in the shop right now!
Thanks,
EDIT: looking at your first pic, it looks like you do have AC, so your pump pulley will be the same as the one I have. Good info.

Mine's a t-bird, too. And yes, it has AC.
The pulley situation is a bit creative. The crank has 3 rows. The front one is 6" outer diameter and turns the PS pump. The other 2 rows turn the water pump and alternator. The water pump front pulley's front rib is what turns the AC compressor. the front rib on the water pump is 5 5/8", but I dont think it matters too much since it has zero to do with the power steering.

I just went to visit a buddy who has a 429 Mach 1 but with AC, to see what pulleys were on that car. It has the same 6 1/2" pulley as I have on my 351C, but I was unable to get sizes for the crank and w/pump.
Can anyone help further? I'm looking for pulleys without A/C

Ford shows that they used the same PS pulley for AC and non-AC cars on the 429CJ Mustang and Cougar. Pulley part number is D0AZ-3A733-A, casting number is D0AR-A. MPC shows it as 5 5/8" in diameter.

The midsize Torino/Montego used the same pulley for all 70-71 429CJs but do show different pullies for the 1970 model year only N-code 429-4V. N-code is the 365 horse passenger car engine also used in the full size and T-bird lines.

Thank you Hemikiller, that is great info and ought to cover what's needed.

Today, I got around to pulling this PS pump apart. Did I say I didn't expect any problems!! Boy was I wrong. I think this pump lived in a swamp! However, the good news is I think (yet to check) I have parts from another junk PS pump that I can use to fix this one up. On the positive side, the eccentric body and slippers look ok with only very slight rust discoloration, so should clean up. The sleeve bushing is in great shape, no wear, but the shaft has some slight scoring that I hope will polish out sufficiently not to leak.

As for pulleys used on 429/460, I have to ask "why so many variations". Afterall, they all do the same job no matter what vehicle they're on. This makes it confusing and hard to find the best sizes and ratios for optimal PS pump pressure. Thoughts?
