- 1972 R code Mach1. Being resto moded.
I just didnt trust my math so I decided to mock up the rear axle with 3"PVC and simulate the wheels and tires with styrofoam.
Looks like Im spot on.
Axle needs to be 51" spindle to spindle and ride height puts the axle 3" from the frame rails. Wheels are 20X12 with -.44 offset. 14" tires clear on both sides by 1" and at full bottom (axle hitting frame rails)there still is a 1" clearance to the tub.
Looks good to go.
Time to mount up mock 4 link brackets and get measurements for the axle company to make the custom unit. Going with an Eaton helical center with 4:11 gears. With the double overdrive 6 speed Tremec, that will still bring RPMs under 1800 at 75 MPH using 28.9" diameter tires. First gear will be a crisp 38MPH at 5500 RPM. Good way to get to the speed limit without speeding! 1 to 6 shift while Mr. Policeman is clocking.
51" works well with 14" wide tires on a tubed Mach. Ill need to mock up 4 link brackets next so I can place them on the frame and get measurements for the axle company to mount.
Gives a somewhat accurate picture of how the tires are going to ride. The look is to have about 1-2" of rubber showing between the top of the wheel and the fender... Dont want it too low.
