As most of you know, 1971 was the only year where the big block (429) was installed in our cars from the factory. I, unfortunately, came late to the Mustang game as I got my first one (which I still have), a 1973 (Export Only) 351Cj with C6 and 3:25 traction lok rearend. Stationed overseas, I raced the car for a number of years with a the heavily modified 351CJ motor until I installed a 428SCJ in 1981.

I returned to the "States" in 1986 and in 1989 purchased a daily driver, a 1989 5.0 LX (which I still have). In the intervening years, I became fascinated with the 429/460 motors and decided to pull the 428SCJ and installed it into a 1969 Mach 1 that I acquired. I also purchased a '73 Grande that originally had a 302 engine in it.  I used the Grande as a "test mule" for my ultimate goal which was to install a stroked 429SCJ (545) into my '73 Mach 1.

For the '73 Grande, I started with a '70 Galaxie (N-code) motor, C6, and 3:50 rear-end.  When I tore down the motor, I found it was actually a 460. I subsequently rebuilt the motor, transmission and change the rear-end to a nodular 4:10 with traction lok.

After getting practice with the Grande, I sent the 429SCJ block to a renown engine building in Missouri for the actual build and dyno testing of the 545. The specifics for that build-up can be found at
