As usual, great input from everyone. Thank you. Maybe I'll "cowboy up" and give it a shot?
We all started at zero. I had a couple hundred in gifted Craftsman tools and a Haynes manual when I started in '89. Today, you have the internet forums and hundreds of possible resources. You're already working through and diagnosing problems yourself, so you're on the right track. Worst case, you learn how to repair a stripped thread and pay someone to rebuild the carb.
Best case, you learn a new skill, gain some confidence for the next project and end up with a much better running vehicle.
