My Car
1973 red convertible 351 4 V
I am looking for something louder to replace my stock mufflers. I have a 73 vert with a 351 4V. I still want to be able to hear the radio and I don't want my neighbors to hate me. So something moderate will work. Any recommendation's would be appreciated.

I have Flowmaster 40's on my 351 4V and they sound great, get lots of good comments. Downside is droning at 2500 rpm that goes away at 3000. This is common on these cars, but my exhaust specialist claims that the Flowmaster's are the main cause. He recommends Dynomax saying they are about the same sound, but without the drone. I've not heard a set of them so I can't say for sure. Maybe he just wants to sell me a set as that is what he sells! I have to replace my old exhaust soon, so if anyone can confirm, I'm all ears.

My car, a 73 Q Code Mach 1, came with Flowmaster 40's. The first "mod" I did was to toss them for Dynomax Super Turbo's. All is good now.

My Borlas are pretty quiet and very mellow.

My Borlas are mellow while cruising and BEAST when on the throttle!!

I like these https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-631125/overview/ because they look period correct and sound good, louder than stock but not annoying. Chuck

Those are the ones I'm running. Sounds decent and they don't drone on the highway but they may be a little more restrictive than some of the others out there.

 Interesting!

The subject of drone has been gone over before. Some have tried resonators with differing results as I remember.

So what is the cause of that annoying drone? Is it just the wave pulse traveling along the pipe? If so then a side branch resonator might be the answer, but where to put it as it's pretty tight under there.

It would be wonderful if a change to a better muffler would fix it. Perhaps some of you who have suggested other brands can comment on their experience with [eliminating] drone.

This is of particular interest to me as I'm very close to needing a new system also.

On my 73 Q code vert I'm running Hooker Comp headers, 2 1/4 pipes H pipe and a pair of Summit brand Aero Chamber mufflers. No drone just a great real V8 sound and as the revs increase the sounds just keeps sounding better without being overly loud. I've had people ask what I'm using as the really like the sound. When I tell them they cant believe such a cheap and easy system sounds that good. I got onto these mufflers through a mate of mine when he needed some cheap mufflers on a car he bought in the US to drive around in. He ended up liking the sound so much they're still on the car today. They're a very well made piece and look just like the Hookers and quite a few people I know have been using them and are very happy with them

These are the type we use, in fact my exhaust guy was so impressed with them and now uses them as well.     https://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/sum-630160/overview/

NO DRONE!! Now That is very interesting and as you say cheap (ish). Nearly 40% on our Canadian dollar ups it a bit, but still worth considering.

Thanks for your input.

Dynomax Super Turbo's
I agree. the DynoMax Turbos have all the breathing a hot street engine can dish out, but the car doesn't sound like an 18 year old owns it. I had my local muffler shop put a whole new exhaust system on my Mach 20 years ago, all stock, except for the mufflers, which were (are) the walker DynoMax Turbos. The entire system is still on and solid. It idles with a subtle deep tone and sounds smooth on the freeway with no drone. I drive the car everyday, and to me, it matters. If you only use your car as a Sunday ride, loudness won't matter.

Just my opinion, Flowmasters are so "over done", noisy and tinny sounding.....just my .02 cents
