I took my lab out bird hunting today. First time she's been out, so I wasn't too sure what to expect. She shows good instincts but her nose is so-so. The place I went to is a state wildlife area south of Las Animas, Colorado (google it if you want, it's called Purgatoire River SWA) and there was at least a full foot of snow on the ground. After an hour and a half of trudging through the snow my dog and I were both wiped out, so we called it a day :).

I miss my native home (CO). My lab would freak if she saw snow. She hates walking on the lawn here when it's wet.

Looks like fun...I like doing a little bird hunting..Got her trained with hand signals? My freind use to raise and hunt with weinheimer...they had them all trained on hand signals and the whole bit...lol....very smart dogs..Labs too..im suprized yours dont like water..But i guess there like people..You cant tell who will like what....There was a big brown lab that hung out down at the river i live next too...You could throw in any rock into that dirty brown water...and that dog would bring up the same rock you threw!! and if he didnt find it...He wouldnt stop till he almost would die...lol...Smart dogs..Full of engery too..lol

I've never trained a hunting dog before so I'm learning as I go. She's not on hand signals, but she ranges out about 20 yards or so, then she'll stop and look back at me. If I point at a clump of trees she'll sniff around it and try to find something. Sometimes she'll see where I'm headed if I change direction and cut me off so she stays ahead of me :). I'm going to work with her some more with some bird wings and see if I can get her nose developed some more. She's almost 2 years old though, so I'm not sure how much more I can get out of her.

It doesn't matter really though, she's a companion dog first and foremost; she is an awesome pet!

Hyena, you live out in the tri-cities area or Yakima, don't you? Good Quail hunting out there I've heard.

My lab was like that. He would almost die trying to bring up/back whatever we threw. He would rather be in the water than anywhere. He would escape from our yard to go to the neighbor's because they had a pool. Whenever he went missing we'd look at the pool and he was in it.
