Trunk Brackets with Caulking and Rust

I was working in the trunk, removing surface rust and found a lot of what I think is caulk around and in the trunk brakets. When I removed the caulk, there was a nice surprise of a lot of rust. So...I will need to replace them and the sheet metal underneath it. Was the caulk from the factory? Or somebody's effort to cover up a problem?

It's been a while since I looked at mine but I'm pretty sure they had caulk around them too. I also have rust like yours. I think it was factory. Mark

The rust was factory?

It would appear that it did a really good job at keeping in the moisture for rust.

The body sealer is factory around that bracket.

I replaced both brackets on mine and the rusty ones did have caulking around it.

New bracket purchased, cancer cut out, now time for patch panel. Seems like the more you cut, the rust you find lurking.
