Recently I had been talking to a few 71/73 Mustang owners who had installed new after market trunk seals. They had problems getting their trunk lid to shut.
My Mach still has the original seal. It has air holes in it which allows air to escape from the seal allowing the seal to compress which allows the trunk lid to seat without any issues.
Attached are two photos showing air hole size and spacing for your info. I would suggest modifying the after market seal by adding air holes to help your trunk lid to close/seal without issues.
