Well, I got into a little fender bender a few weeks ago. The car is getting new sheet metal and grille, but paint matching is out of the question, due to original paint. It's going into the body shop for a total re-paint ( stock factory color that it is ), so I started stripping the body of mouldings, stripes, wing, most everything that I can unbolt. Fenders, hood, trunk, and various pieces are being chemical stripped, so the finished car should be wonderfull.
Went through this too when a women hit me, then someone rear ended the car when it was being towed. After a full year in the shop the car came home with new parts and a full repaint. I am kind of thankful it happened. Otherwise I would have never gotten the money to do all the body work and get new paint until after college.

What did I do today? Put the car on stands since my tranny went. I am hoping it is something simple like a lose band or something. We will see.

Went to the local car show today. There were 148 cars there and at least 100 of them mustangs. there was 4 fastbacks and at least 2 verts present in the 7173 years. Wade and Ken showed up from the forum and it was a great day to visit and enjoy the cars. The first question is who goes to a show and forgets a camera? At least 2 of us did:mad: On a positive note though I placed 3rd in the 64-1/2 to 1973 restomod category. I asked a friend to send me some pics so I'll post some when I get them. Also got to see and hear a new GT 350 and boy does it sound awesome.

O.K.......My '71 Mach 1 is officially in the body shop for a complete strip down to the metal re-paint in single-stage Medium Yellow Gold. Now, all of the trim and pieces taken off the body will get re-done or replaced with new NOS. I only want to do this once with my daily driver but I intend on having it "first cabin". Photos to follow as it goes along.

Nice John.

I tried to go to the SVTOA show in Tacoma, but had to abort. The drive shaft felt like it wanted to shoot out of the car by the time I got to Lacey. So... It's getting parked till I have time later to figure out what the issue is... I gotta get on my F-350 and get the trans rebuilt first.

Working all of the bugs is a time consuming job but you'll eventually get there. Do you think you'll make it up to the Cool Desert Nights in late June?

Hi Rick,

Hey that sounds great! I'm quite impressed that you and your wife get involved in working together on the Mustang.

Isn't the old saying - them that plays together, stays together a good one.

I hope in your case, that's true. Good photo there too.

Well my little spruce up job and drive has gotten out of hand as usual. I am down to the firewall. Took dash out today so I can send wiring to get all the screwed up stuff fixed. There was everything from wire nuts down. Car was changed from idiot lights to gage car and not done very clean.

So while all the dash is out I ordered a new heater core and foam kit for the air and heat. Got all the ducts out washed and will blast all the doors tomorrow and paint. Got to find the 1/4" socket to get the defroster vent off to wash. The case was in great shape I don't think it had ever been out stuff sprayed on the nuts on firewall had not been disturbed. There was only a hand full of pine needles in the box. There was NO gas in the air conditioner so that will be the next project. Note to those that find mice or rats nests in your heater box. There are only a few places that can get in unless you have lots of rust. If you put regular screen wire under the cowl vents that will keep them out there. There are a couple water drains on the side of the cowl that need something over them. I have a pet black snake that keeps the mice out of my Mach 1. Had it come out from under the dash once while sitting it in. That will get you moving when you cannot tell what it is.

So far new master cylinder, cleaned under the hood, buffed out the original paint, rebuilt the tilt column with new turn signal and new rag joint. Painted metal part of dash, painted all the camera black parts of dash, got all the lights working in instrument cluster but will send it along with harness to have everything checked together.

I work on player piano during winter but that is a lot of the same thing over and over it is a hobby and only doing the one for my garage. Honky Tonk music and then Pink Floyd. I have wide tastes.

Today was transmission day, or so I thought. I have a leaking front seal and the plan was to put in a new seal and check out everything else.

Transmission bolts out, wires and vacuum lines disconnected, linkage unhooked, starter off, cross member off.

Transmission stuck to engine

I'm beat up and tired.

Wow David,

your work is amazing in regards what you're doing and the scope of all that. You sound like a very knowledgeable guy indeed. Keep up the good work. I hope you are enjoying what you're doing too.

Anyone can take it apart. It takes lots of Whiskey and pictures to put it back together, lol.

We been workin together on mustangs for 38 years. She likes to drive fast, been clocked @ 130 in Goldie by a friend with radar and a badge.

rebuilt the valve train on my replacement trans... why is nothing easy?

the valve train had damage from a previous rebuild. i had to re tap half the bolts going into the casting.

good thing i caught the problem before i caused even more damage.

who ever rebuilt the transmission before me did not use proper torque specs for the valve train which is 45-55 'INCH POUNDS' not 'foot pounds'

what a mess.

We did the headlight relay modification on both the 73 Mustang and the 68 Torino.

It took 20 bucks worth of parts and about an hour to do each car and made a HUGE difference in the brightness of both the dash lights and the headlights.

Here are the instructions:

http://1970mgr.org/_HeadlightRelays.htm

One useful note: The red/black stripe wire and the green/black stripe wires need to be spliced into from the main harness that goes to the fire wall and not the smaller harness that comes from behind the drivers head light.

I tapped into the shorter harness first and only one side worked.

Once I tapped into the main harness farther back it worked peachy.

I am very pleased with the results.

I went in the garage and looked at it! It's been raining here all Spring. Hard to complain since most years we're begging for rain. I think I've only had it 4 or 5 times since March. I'm starting to get withdrawals.

Quarter panel patches & rebuilt doors installed and body work complete. Door jams trimmed up and black base coat shot on complete car. All work just in time for my little girls prom on Thursday. It's been a long journey, but I'm out of cash for now !!!

Thanks Jay

I prepared mine for inspection tomorrow. So it's back to the Magnums and I installed my custom sports lamps delete plates. :)
