Collected my car from the garage today, after having the Pertronix automatic ignition fitted, drives like a dream now. The kids came along too.

Passed inspection with no non conformance or flaw whatsoever.

Now I can drive for another two years. :)
Good job,

I have heard that the inspections in Germany are very strict not allowing rust buckets and banged up vehicles on the road.

I know I was in South Africa and went with a friend to have one of his cars inspected since he had a hunting ranch and drove people in it. They did not just look at the car they put the brakes through a dynamic test on a dyno and if they did not hold as specified you failed. Then they put the car on a like four post table that twisted and moved the suspension around to check for worn parts. Along with all the lights, horn and regular things. It was a pretty tight inspection I thought.

I know we all complain about it in the U.S. but we have it easy here compared to the other places in this world.

I can actually say something here, I have the sound deadener in the doors, quarters and rear section over the tunnel and under the back seat. I did the first run of the new found quarter trim panels from a MOPAR guy that charged me 280.00 LESS than our forum vendors!!!!! Hats off to this MOPAR guy for selling at a reasonable price !! So they are great quality and a reasonable price. I now can look into the back and it looks like a car. Tomorrow I will paint the just because and start removing the front seats and completing the material. She's quiet already.

Went cruising last night with a buddy of mine. We started at a park and shine with a couple of hundred cars and ended up a place local place called Hurricane's. There we were a one-car car show. Not sure these girls really qualify as Mustang Babes but it was great how the younger crowd was really into an old Mustang. She was so mesmerized that she didn't get out of it for over half an hour and took a ton of pictures.

cheers!

I notice lots of people are having trouble with their transmissions! My car is also on jack stands during some of the most beautiful weather in New England.

I just ordered a master rebuild kit for mine since my intermediate band snapped. At least it is nothing major and everything else inside the transmission looks great. I will replace both bands at once.

I am wondering if I should order new servo's, they are so expensive!!

They don´t twist chassis but they put the brakes on the dyno and I´m always worried about the parking brake because it not only tends to be week but also have very different values from left to right, given the way it is constructed.

The measurements mustn´t be too far off from one side to the other and it was ok.

But, like I said, it made it.

Yesterday I put in the new rear end but I could not finish because it took me over an hour and a half to get all the four screws back into the plate that holds the axles on the brake drums. (Don´t ask why, I dunno. They just wouldn´t fit in).

Driver side took me 4 minutes to install, passenger side was a PITA, so I had to stop last night because we were invited for dinner. Didn´t get to it today because I have to work, so I´ll try and finish up tomorrow morning before my shift starts at noon.

Ok, I put the axle in and somehow got that screw back on that kept me busy for half an eternity last Friday, put the fluid in, and while I was at it and the car was off the ground, I also took the Magnums off and put the 18 inch rims back on and actually drove it to work.

The car feels much lighter with the 3.8 gears. It's not that much faster (ok, I didn't get on it because I want to give the rear end a chance to break in) but it fells like the car weighs a lot less, giving less resistance to the throttle.

I was shocked though at the increase in rpm on the freeway, despite the AOD. I calculated it before I ordered it and i came up with an increase of 300 rpm at 120 km/h (75mph) but it seems I was wrong because it feels like it's much more.

Trouble is today I measured my speed with a GPS device because I don't have the new speedo drive thingy yet.

I didn't check if the speedo was accurate before the swap, I think it measured a bit on the high side too, so the 2000 rpm it showed at 120 km/h might have been 2000rpm at only 110 km/h or even less.

Now it reads 3000 rpm at 120 km/h on the GPS.

I guess the overall rise in rpm is about 500 rpm and not the 300 I calculated. Oh well....!

My car is in the body shop getting re-painted, and I stripped the body of external goodies before it went there. So, every evening since, I clean up something, polish something, etc, getting the pieces ready to be put back on.

As I was cleaning up the taillights, I took the lenses off of the white plastic buckets to clean them, and discovered that the rounded "reflectors" behind the bulbs are just white plastic, so I masked the rest of the plastic backing piece off, and sprayed the reflector bowls with a chrome aerosol paint to give it a more mirror-like reflectiveness. We'll see. My hopes are that I will have much brighter tail lights without going to led's. I don't have any "before photos of the lights, but if this makes a noticeable difference, I'll post up the low dollar tail light brightness fix.

I took the tilt steering column out of it to see if it would fit in my 75 XB Falcon Coupe. IT DOES! Sort of, it's actually a bit too long with the aftermarket steering wheel and hub on it.

Pulled my transmission and clutch and flywheel off in preparation for a clutch change and a new rear main seal.

Found out the preferred Felpro 2902 2 piece Rear main seal is no longer available and discontinued. Now searching for the best alternative.

Taking my flywheel for resurfacing today.

Gear ratios, tire diameters, and speedometers are funny things. My '80 Jeep CJ-7 came stock with 30-inch tires (not sure of the P-metric size) and 2.73:1 gears. I never really paid attention to the rpm range on the highway (at 65 mph), so I have no idea how much things had changed as a result - but the speedometer was dead on, with the worn-out 31x10.50 Coopers (overall diameter worn-out back to factory size).

In '96, I lifted the Jeep 4" and stuffed some 33x15.50 Super Swampers under it, and Oh - My - Gawd did that mess things up. I knew it would have an effect, but not that bad. My speedometer was now off by 12%! I was rolling down the highway at 65mph (on my speedometer) blowing past everybody like they were standing still. Did a check with a buddy and learned how far off it was - so I just adapted and learned to drive with the speedometer error. When I would drive at (actual) 65mph, my engine would lug down on every little inkling of an incline.

In 2002-ish, I swapped some new wider axles under with 4.10s... and boy did that mess things up in a whole new direction. Now, I was struggling to keep up on the highway because the engine's screamin' at 3800 rpm, and in order to keep up with traffic the speedometer is showing 85mph! I also can't even make it across the intersection without needing to grab 2nd... but I can almost hope out of the Jeep and walk next to it while it's idling, and it climbs like a beast. Needless to say, I've learned to live with that too, even though 3.55s would've been perfect to line everything up again. ;)

I would just stuff in a new speedometer gear and be happy with the new low-end.

I installed a new timing cover and front seal, new oil pump pickup, oil pan and gasket.
Mike, I noticed you have warmed up your engine, as your reply indicates...how does it run. Any issues? You and I essentially have the same car but mine is stock..just interested in how you like it. I used to have headers on my car but took them off after two days when I crushed them going over a supermarket speed bump!

It was running great until the oil pump locked up. The mods in my signature made a big difference in power with no drivablity problems really. Right now I am about to install the 351w out of my race car into my fastback while I rebuild the cleveland over the next year or so. Should hopefully be up and running by next week.
