These days any decent local graphics shop should be able to make something up. Look for someone who makes up car show display boards.
They should be able to laser cut vinyl decals using computer graphics programs.

As an update, I contacted two graphics places, including Phoenix, and didn't hear from them. I found this place that makes custom decals so I may give them a try. I quickly tested their make-your-own app and it is very easy. The Arial font is very close. I am not looking for a concourse match so I think this looks like a good alternative. If anyone wants to piggy back on "408 RAM AIR" decals in black, let me know and I can order extra.

As I am getting my fiberglass hood painted I was thinking of adding a "408 Ram Air" decal to the hood instead of the "351 Ram Air". I think at some point I saw this decal being sold but I can't remember where. Do any of you have a good lead?

I am sure Graphics Express can make it for you. They make the stock 351 Ram Air Decals. I used them for custom stuff in th epast. Give these guys a call ...1678199689284.png

I needed a 408 for my 70 Mach1 and could not find one anywhere, so I bought 428, used the 4 and 8 and made my own 0 using the 8 as a template.

Thanks but I checked them out before but what turned me off is that the Q&A page specifically states that they don't do customs.

  • Do you make custom stripes and decals? NO.

I used Phoenix Graphics for my 393 RAM AIR decals. Cost me $70. Now I'll have to cost the install at my local body shop.
I contacted Graphics Express and they confirmed their no to customs.
I am going to try CarStickers. It should be around $25 for two. I will try to do it myself so I may order some extra expecting that I will screw up during installation or for future needs.

Rather than use a decal, I would suggest you consider using a paint template stencil instead. This way you can paint the hood, then apply the blackout, with Callout Characters (408 RAM AIR) using Hot Rod Black Matte, and let the underlying paint peer through the black paint while displaying your Call Out characters. I think it looks really nice like that, personally.

In the link below you can see our 73 Mach 1, using a template for both the hood blackout, and the "351 RAM AIR" Call Out. The paint is PPG Sunset Orange (a translucent, fine grain metallic) shot over a base white to give it the candy effect. The blackout is PPG Hot Rod Black Matter, which provides a smooth surface while also diffusing (sun)light reflections from the hood's surface (which is based on the used of Flat Black on fighter planes to reduce glare from the sun being reflected off the front of the plane).

As for the template(s), I got it from Graphics Express, as well as my paint template for the Call Out characters. I like Rackerm's suggestion above. Get a template as close as you can to what you are after, and custom make your own template for remaining characters, At least you do not need to worry about matching the surface appearance of decals as the underlying paint is what will be displaying the characters.

> When selecting the Call Out be sure to select "Paint Stencil" instead of a decal color
> If you want to use some precut stencils for the "408" part of the Call Out you can start with the "4" from "429 RAM AIR" Call out at:

> Or, you could leave off the "408 from the Call Out and just use "RAM AIR" at:

They did a minor change for me, when I ordered the tail panel stripe my 70. Can't hur

Tony,

They may have changed their policy on custom stuff since I last ordered.

You need it in black (not Silver) correct? I still have plenty of the matt black decal material left from when I did my 70. I have a set of black NOS "351 Ram Air" decals that I can use as a template. I like a challenge, I think I'll try making the "408". I'll post them, and if you want them, I can just mail them to you...

Thank you. I will PM you.

When it comes to custom decals, or template stencils, our 1973 Mach 1 has the Mach 1 side stripes on it from Graphic Express, "mostly." The "mostly" is because all but the driver front forward stripe what has the L/F side marker light in the middle of the stripe, had a badly fitting stripe piece. Our restoration shop had a guy come out who does stripe and detail work for care for dealers and whips in our area. Hew was able to take some of his vinyl stock material and created the needed vinyl decal piece. Looking at the result it is not possible to tell his piece of vinyl from the rest of the stripe work from Graphic Express. I bet he could have created a stencil also were we to have painted the side stripes on.

I have a YouTube video showing side marker LED lights that I installed on the 73 Mach 1. With the video I have the L/F marker light, and its black stripe that was custom cut, showing at 00:36 mm:ss into the video. I bet there is "someone" that provides pinstriping and related work for dealers and body shops in your area. It would be worth making a few calls or visits to find out.

Thank you. I am not planning on painting the letters. It is a lot easier just to stick them and I can do it in my garage. I am working with a few sources and I will post the results.

I like the one suggestion having someone with a Cricut machine making thee numerals for you. The first challenge is finding someone with a Cricut machine. The next is helping them find the time to do yet another project. Our D-I-L has a Cricut machine and loves using it. She is forever working on projects for herself and friends. I know I dare not ask her to squeeze in any projecrts for me as I know she is already buried. I "think" Lynda (wife) might have purchased one, but we are busy being retired that she has no time to spend on any more projects (quilting, custom sewing, related projects).

Thank you. Couple forum members are helping me so I think it is covered.
