Not sure if this has been done before - couldn't find anything anyway so was a bit of a project to make come to life.
Aftermarket centre stack, and I 3D printed an adaptor to retrofit a 7" touchscreen - or regular double DIN headunit out of ABS. about 10 prototypes were done to get the perfect fit.
Only modification needed was bending up the metal cage behind it to give the gauge cables some breathing room.
Didn't come out too bad.
If you're after one, let me know. Australia based.
Also installed 3 x RaceWorks gauges. New sensors, nifty little things.

Very nice. Can you post more pics of the process of making and integrating the parts? I’m not too sure how the pieces fit together. I thought about going this way, but a single DIN worked for me and had the backup camera. That looks great, almost factory.

Thanks. Although I have access to a 3D scanner, it's pretty basic to sort out with some calipers. Started with a cardboard template of the side profile I needed to make, and slowly started adding features. It's bolted in from behind with 4 heatsert nuts, and 2 more heatsert nuts to bold the adaptor up from underneath as shown below.

Really a tight fit to get everything snug and looking somewhat OEM.
Although I've seen the other widescreen 7" units it's just nice to have a generic 7" double DIN size available. Who knows in a few years if this carks it, you could honestly fit whatever else you wanted.

But Dad wanted Google Maps, so it'll be sweet whilst driving.

Any points where a screw goes in or any flimsy points are 100% infilled to make it as strong as possible. Feels good!

Nice job. Here is my work in progress.

I need to finish the climate control mounting. I got distracted by speaker instal and power window install.

Had the speaker install into doors ready then the nu-relics power window regulator came in and they interfered with speaker holes I made.

Making a repair panel to support where I cut speaker hole

Then I have to make new speaker holes.

Jeez

I guess thats why I went the 7”. With the adapter it still leaves the climate controls accessible. Still looks great though!

Thx.

I still need to move the radio back another .5-.75” so the screen can tilt back.

It is tilted forward now to clear the shifter.

Me and my OCD….

Component speakers front and back.

Pair of 12” shallow stereo subs and an amp will round out the system.

Won’t be super loud, but trying to balance sound vs weight

This is my high school car. Class of 86. I had four 12” subs in the rear deck. This was the package tray. :)

Very nice. Always neat to incorporate 3D printing in these old cars where it makes sense and adding decent NAV / Android Auto has been great. Like Steve above, I did a single DIN unit and am happy enough with it. Still, I could see myself trying something like this next time I take my dash apart.

Any chance you'd share the STL or are you looking to sell prints? You put in the work to sort it out so I get wanting to maybe make back a few bucks for your time.

Absolutely. Great using 3D printing in all the cars I have at home to just finish off those little bits! I'd like to sell the units whole. This BambuLabs P1S/AMS isn't going to pay for itself :p

Back when I was in my twenties, oh yeah, having a righteous stereo system was what we all had up there on the list of things needed for our rides. Cars only had AM, sometimes AM/FM radios from the factory. But then, I got a chopped '34 Ford coupe , big Hemi in it. Even with mufflers, it was somewhat loud, and I learned to love the music coming from the engine. Funny, I was very into music, but I liked the rumble of my engine better. I've gotten older, but I've been that way ever since, putting the sound of my car before the stereo. Secondarily, I hate cutting up panels on my cars, but that's the restorer in me talking.

Ya. 3” exhaust and dumps definitely is not stereo friendly

Just make it louder!

:)

Totally get you there.
To be honest this is more for the ability to have maps on a decent size screen over the stereo, although for my dad having the stereo is also nice as it's just a cruiser.
I installed a similar headunit in my weekender aswell, same deal - I just listen to the engine, i love it. But damn having the 7" screen for apple maps is bloody unreal in an old car where you struggle to find a good place to have a phone setup.
