Hi guys,

I'm heading out to play with the new toy tomorrow in it's hidden location from my fiancé and need to do some poking around on it. I picked up a '71 H code a little while back….

(see http://www.7173mustangs.com/thread-lets-keep-this-a-secret-from-my-fiance-please)

…..and I need to confirm a couple of things. Being an H code I know it should be a 351c 2v. However, it has an Edelbrock 4v carb on it. The PO said it was a Boss 351 4v which I knew was wrong immediately by the VIN H code. However, it's certainly possible the engine could've been replaced I suppose and not just the carb although I think that was common. I'm just beginning to learn about this car and it's engine and could use some help here. I've searched this site with no success so far.

So to my question; Where do I look for the engine codes on the engine itself to confirm what it actually is and if it was the original engine?

OR, what clues on the engine will tell me what it is?

Thanks,

Eric

Ok so right after I posted this I found a thread saying get the numbers above the starter motor. I'll do that tomorrow and see what's up!

easy deal . . just remove the starter motor and get the casting codes.

Couple of things you can look for...

The VIN was stamped into the engine block...it is located at the rear of the driver side head just below where the head meets the block. You can see it with a mirror or put your phone back there and take pics. May need to clean off first.

Another thing is many 2 barrel engines have intake manifolds that are designed to work with 2 barrel heads. So you can convert an H code into a 4 barrel motor with just an intake and carb change. To see what heads you have you can look at the corners that extend past valve covers and see if there is a number 2 or 4.

Here is a pic of VIN at back of motor...

With the engine in, it's a pain trying to see the VIN# number, I tried using a mirror with no luck, finally used a flexible scope camera, worked great. I believe some auto parts stores will even lend you one. To my delight the engine number matched my dash Vin# and the number stamped on the frame.

When I bought mine, I didn't know about 2V or 4V.

My car came out the factory with a CJ engine, means with 4V's heads. Later I saw that I had 2 V's heads, with a 4V intake and a 4 barrels carb.

The engine could be swapped by another one, the heads could be changed, and the block is still the original one, who knows. So I decided to remove the starter motor to read: D2AE-CA, that can be 2 or 4 bolts main, can be a H or CJ code...

At the end, as I have absolutly no hystory about my car, I don't care anymore, I spent a lot of hours on it, it's working very well and very happy about my pony, more than enough power to the rear wheels :)

Thanks for the notes everyone. Good info there Manu. Thank you for the references. I got sidetracked putting on a fuel pump and still haven't figured this one out but will this weekend.

Loving this car!
