hmmm, so you are saying that the ZDDP was able to take out a single lobe/lifter and leave fifteen other ones alone?

I think if you share the cam company and builders comments we’ll know the cause… guess would be that #2 lifter did not rotate in the lifter bore. just saying

I ran zinc after my rebuild with FT and within 6 months washed out the #2 exhaust lobe and the finger pointing, lack of accountability from builder to cam maker started so I went RR and run straight 10/30 and all has been good.

Johnson lifters has my future business if ever needed on a different build.
What cam and lifters are they? Yikes!

Oh there was more to it than that… when we tore it down there were several issues with evidence of studs not torqued properly, etc.
We documented everything during disassembly and when the engine builder came to look it over, the first thing out of his mouth was “we did a dyno break-in on this right?” My brother’s look could have killed and I just met this guy and knew I was screwed and going RR and he wasn’t touching it again. It was a Comp cam, don’t know which lifters he used but according to him it was Comps fault. Anyway, f that guy.

The question is how was cam broken in. If it was immediately run at approximately 2500 rpm for 30 minutes and varying rpm as you do it. Wouldn’t have to be done on a dyno to live. Proper oil, and proper break in procedure are vital. If there was still a problem, it could definitely be poor quality parts. The cam guy I usually use (Brent Lykins of Lykins Motorsports ) has them ground with extra taper to help lifter rotate and avoid excessive wear.

Wow. I'm amazed to hear so much dislike for CompCams. Granted, I built mine in 2011, but I used CompCams 'everything' (except the Crane 7/16" rocker studs), and I couldn't be happier - runs like a champ, never any stumbles, hassles or weird noises. Either things have really gone that far downhill, I've been incredibly lucky, or I just have incredibly low standards.

Like I said earlier when the engine builder came to look at the cam, he asked if “they” broke it in, as they then also dynoed it at their shop and delivered it to our shop. As some others have questioned Comp cams, I have no problems with them as the roller cam that I put back in is another Comp matched with the Johnson lifters.

I have to trust they broke in the cam with zinc oil. We dropped the oil and added 6qts of VR1 10-30 and changed it again after I put 500 on it. It lasted from Sept - Apr when it washed out the lobe. He couldn’t answer the question why all the lobes didn’t show abnormal wear. So like I said before, f that guy and all his Midwest circle track engine builder trophies for mainly LS engines.
