Tore down my gearbox for rebuild and ran into a LITTLE (first thing that will be jumped on)problem. Manual says depending on the model there should be either 27 or 29 ball bearings for the worm gear.

Mine only had 25 when I tore it down. Will this be an issue? I know I didn't drop any and am thinking it may have been rebuilt over the years.

So yes, I'm missing 2-4 balls! (have at it). :p Anybody else tore this down before? I'm about ready to put it back together and obviously don't want to have to do it twice. Thanks in advance.

I don't recall the count but I know there are two different "kinds" of ball bearings, one is more shiny than the other and the book was specific on starting with one kind and the alternating the balls back into the curved split tube (without forgetting what you put in last). It is a real PITA especially if you change the sector bearing. Chuck

I thought i remembered the book saying something about the order of the balls going back in. They have to go back in same order as they came out. I thought they said they are different size balls in there?? When i rebuilt mine this winter i didnt tear it completely down because of the mess inside! Looked too complicated for my liking and mine just needed resealed. One thing i remeber is when you put the two seals in on the pitman arm shaft "DO NOT seat the first seal in all the way to the lip inside." I didnt read that in the book till after ialready seated the 1st seal done deep to the lip. I dont know if it will make much of a difference, but i pulled it back out and replaced it. Good luck. If you have the factory repair manuals, they have a great step by step procedure for the teardown and rebuild of the gearbox.
