Slightly confused about what engine I've got here - 70's 351c in a 69 chassis

Evening all,

Wondering you someone can help with this one, trying to find a diagram that matches up with my 351c but I'm not seeing much. I'm currently missing a few lines off the PSV and the distributor vacuum advance valve. If I'm correct there's supposed to be a line into the intake manifold too at the front of the engine but that appears to be capped off with a thin metal nub?

I've attached several images if anyone can ID which year 351c this is please?

The overall issue I'm trying to sort currently is the car stalls when it goes into reverse or drive or if you rev it, it drops revs and stalls. Idles fast as well. It's an FMX box

Hi and welcome from SW Ontario, Canada.

I'll try to start the ball rolling by confirming it is a Cleveland 2V motor.
In a 69, the original motor would have been a 351 Windsor. So, someone may have dropped a Cleveland in to it later.
This may be hard to get to and read, but on the block, just below the left side head, you will find a partial VIN for the original car it was in.
This will be something like 1f XXXXXXX for a 71 engine or 2f for a 72 etc. The "f'" is for a Dearborn built vehicle. This motor may have come from a few different Ford cars, but the VIN code will identify that by the first number, i.e. 5f would be from a Mercury (i think)
Also, above the starter, there will be the casting code and date code, but the starter needs to come out to read that. Here's a pic of a block casting code. This is my engine in a 71, Date code is 1A7 or 71 Jan 07.

I would check for vacuum leaks if it stalls when you put it in gear. Is your distributor vacuum advance going to the right spot? I see that you have a dual advance canister- you'll need to confirm that the correct side of the diaphragm is seeing vacuum at the correct load condition.

As Geoff has pointed out, someone has swapped a 351C into the car so you will have to convince yourself that it was done correctly. If the engine is healthy you should be fine if the tune up is ok.

Checked the block, ID tag is 0A4221476

So from what I understand, this could be one of the following:

  • Ford Mustang
  • Ford Torino
  • Mercury Cougar
  • Mercury Montego

The engine was swapped back in the 70's, I'm trying to sort the vacuum system but can't find a diagram that matches this engine weirdly enough, I was told the 351c in it at the moment was from a 71-73 Mach 1 but I know there's an issue with the vacuum system because there's a bunch of lines missing
 
Intake is D0AE-9425, so it's a 1970 engine.

So I am assuming based off this that it's had the emissions stuff removed/blanked.

The snorkel doesn't have an actuator on it, the intake vacuum line has been plugged off.

I think that partial VIN number on the back driver's side of the block may help you narrow it down. Based on what car it came out of.

In 1970, there really wasn't a ton of vacuum stuff on these cars. You want the ones for the power brakes, transmission modulator, and the one vacuum advance that yours is already hooked to. Just about everything else in the vacuum system was related to emissions and helping the engine get up to operating temperature faster.
