1971 Fastback Find

Looks like 1R01F to me, definitely not a good sign. That says it's neither a Mach 1 or a 1973!

Looks like they were really lazy on the masking for the paint as well. Didn't even pull the weatherstripping off?!

The VIN is 1F01F which decodes to a 71 Coupe with a 302. I would now want to see what the registration/title has on it.

From your pics the car also has a rear fold down seat which is another nice option.

Anyone had a red '73 stolen from them recently? Not the right VIN as mentioned above.

Either:

A. Stolen car

B. Illegal swap to title a car with title issues

C. Someone didn't know what they were doing when they swapped the dash.

Can't hurt to ask to see the title when you're there, and look at the door sticker too. Should prove amusing if it's the 1F01F title and the door sticker is gone. If so, call the cops.

As for the car itself, it is a turd with a paint job - also note the quarter skin job in the door jamb.

$2,500 if they can provide the correct title. $3k MAX if the rust in the trunk is not as bad as it looks here and can be power brushed off without any holes.

The dash may have been switched from another car. See is the door matches the story. Check hidden vin numbers. One should be on the rear of the engine block facing up. Others on shock towers under fenders.

I would get pics of the VIN's in other places, and ask to see the title..

Be very careful... Something stinks.

If it was me, I would tell la' policia and ask for a sheriff to meet me there.

Its rusty too but thats really up to you on that.

They claimed it was a driver in the ad and when i got there they were like o it needs work before it will run. I was like hmm...that seems weird. Not with that sportdeck rear seat. It looks too well put together to be the work of the same hacks who painted it.

For that matter, they would have had it apart enough to give it a decent paint job in the areas where they did not.

And swapping the '71 front end to '73? Doesn't add up either.

What about the title? Was it a '73 or '71 title?

If you don't have the guts to do it, I'd suggest that any Kentucky-located forum member that has the opportunity to see this car to do so - and follow up with the title and police if necessary.

A fellow '71-73 owner may be only a phone call and good Samaritan away from recovering his/her car.

The Tommy's Quality Used Cars website (see: http://ps.getauto.com/dealer/listing/155206/used/?f_stockvin=000#f_make) proves they have enough classics running through their doors (e.g. '70 Chevelle SS, '62 T-Bird, '54 Corvette, etc) that SOMEONE there will be knowledgeable enough to look at the VIN for the usual, money-enhancing digits.

Whoever is in charge of VINs also knows exactly what's going on with this Mustang; hence why they're trying to get it out the door - cheap and incognito, and not on the website.

Call the police and nail the bastards if you have any appreciation for your fellow Mustang owners (and whoever actually owns this car - because I'm 100% convinced it's hot at this point, paint job and all).

I'd call it in myself, but some long-distance hearsay about some Mustang VIN malarkey won't hold much weight.

Couldn't find a sheriff's department website or email, and the town's website does not have an email address on it either.

Most of the action seemed to be on their Facebook page, so I left a message there for the PD. Hopefully, Guthrie law enforcement will give this one a thorough examination.

No way would I touch this car. There are nice fastbacks and Mach 1s out there for $4 and 5k. One will turn up. In the mean time read plenty of the stuff on here and you'll gain a lot of knowledge about these cars. Good luck.

With the right title and a $1k price tag, I'd take it any day. No questions asked. Junk or otherwise, there's $1k of nice parts there.

If the trunk floor is actually in one piece under that surface rust, this could be returned into something decent - provided you don't mind stripping the thing down to address the paint and rust correctly. That's also provided one has a rotted parts car as a donor for the wrecked interior bits and countless sundries.

The VIN is the big deal. I've got my bet on "stolen red 1973 Q-code."

Could be an H-code, but the heavily ticked options list suggests the 4V was probably tagging along on this one. Looks like a tilt wheel car too. Strange thing, it looks like a car worth putting some effort into, if rough.

It's not that I didn't have the guts to do it. It is the simple fact that I don't have the knowledge base to properly argue the case to anyone of authority. As I have mentioned in earlier posts I am obviously not the most experienced with cars, so clearly calling the police on a individual only on internet speculation wouldn't be intelligent on my part. As to your question of the title all the history of the car was "unknown" according to the dealer, so I had no way to confirm. Obviously a red flag that contributed to me not purchasing the car.

A title problem could lead to you building a car only to lose it to the original owner with no compensation (other than potential free room and board at the Greybar Motel) Be patient and keep searching. In the meantime, keep putting a few dollars back whenever you can. The difference between a $3,000 car and a $7500.00 car are tremendous. I saw a beautiful Mach 1 for sale last year in the Goodlettsville area that was under 6k and had good paint, no rust and ran well.

In the meantime, you can come work on my car and get a taste of the joy of vintage car wrenching.

Took me awhile, but I found a cream puff stock 72 Coupe that was Grandma's for $4500..
