I have a bit of a dilemma that maybe some of you guys can help me figure out. My car is in the garage with the engine removed. I want to put it into the driveway to powerwash the engine bay before I drop the refreshed engine back in. The problem is that the driveway is steeper than I am able to push back inside after the wash is done. I'm looking for clever ideas on how to do this myself. I don't have anything to anchor a winch or come-along to (although I have both available). I started drilling the slab for drop in anchors and not real happy with how that is going....I stopped when the drill started walking and wallowing out the first hole. Seems to be some hard aggregate I've run into. I can probably move enough stuff around to park another car on top of some sort of anchor plate and use that to hold a come along. I already know that I could round up some bodies and push it back in, so I don't need that ideal :)

Thanks!

I think you had the right idea.......anchor into the concrete. Move to different spot and drill. ;)

I agree, I've done it two or three times. Start with a smaller drill bit, if you hit a hard spot use a punch to crack the rock. Angle it slightly to keep the cable or chain from slipping off the steel pin you use for the anchor, or install an anchor to bolt into. If the hole wallows out too much, use concrete epoxy to install the anchor.

I added an anchor to my garage floor slab using a hammer drill. I don't know if this is what you are using, but highly recommended. I use the anchor for a winch whenever I want to move my 1000 lbs lift. PS: I used a threaded anchor so it will stay flush with the floor when not in use.

I don't know how deep your garage is, but you could park a vehicle across the back of the garage where you can attach a winch. Ideally will be if you have a truck/car with a hitch to use as an anchor. Even if you can park the vehicle at an angle it may work. Also, if your garage has an opening at the back like a window or door you may be able to find an attachment point somewhere out there and use some long ropes through the window/door.

If the garage is a two car, you could put wheel dolly's under the wheels, spin the car around and then push just the front end out of the garage onto the driveway. Use some blocking where you want the rear wheels to stop so it doesn't roll too far. If the driveway is real steep, you could take the car off the wheel dolly's once you spin it so you can use the brakes to control movement. If most of the car is still in the garage, two guys could push it back in.

I'll give it another shot starting with a smaller bit and break up any hard aggregate i run into. I've done blocks a few times with no problems...nice clean holes....when I did my air compressor, I hit rebar with one of the holes. I guess I'm better suited for working with metal...or even wood haha.

I think you thinking in the wrong direction.
Why don’t you just power wash it in the garage.
When done use the power washer to wash the wast out and then squeegee the floor. I have done it. Work fine

How about a cheap poly tarp under the engine bay, tie up the 4 sides around the car and use a wet vac to suck up the water and muck..

Sounds like your bit is dull or you hit rebar. I agree with others comments, just try another area and if you want start with smaller hole. Also, Sounds silly but make sure your drill is turning in right direction. Not sure if you trying to use drill on hammer setting or have an actual roto-hammer.

I did the inside garage thing, and with a few well positioned cheap tarps from HF, it was successful. And, I put an old moving blanket under the engine compartment to catch the gunk and when I as done, I tossed that in the trash. I ended up with a cleanish driveway, and let the rest dry in the garage and swept that up.

I got the anchors installed, winch mounted, and engine bay pressure washed. To drill the holes, i had to do quite a bit of chipping and grinding of the hard aggregate. Every time the bit would encounter a piece, it would veer off around it. I'm amazed at how hard that material is. I must be granite...whatever it is, a carbide burr does little to it.

Thanks to all for the tips.

Best way I've found is to buy beer.
Then you knock at neighbour's door and ask for muscles!

My 71 needed be pushed out of the garage till street, turned 180 deg and back on driveway/garage, say some 60 meters. Actually I was surprised, the car with no engine/trans was really easy to be pushed with 2 persons, even with my driveway going up. Once in garage, that's when you need to use the beer as it helps for the next time you need muscles again :D
