My Car
1973 Coupe 351 Cleveland AOD
I have always thought that there should be something between the trunk of my 73 coupe and the back seat. Currently, there is not. I was toying of the idea of carpeting the trunk and adding a subwoofer when I found this kit with "backing boards". It looks like there is a piece that would fit in that space. Anyone know what the original configuration was? Thanks as always.

I don't know if you have or are planning on driving in the rain, but the way water drains in the rear if will get the trunk drop offs wet. That said beware if you drive in the rain or wash your car to check the drop offs for water and let the carpet dry accordingly.

I always thought the only thing in the trunk from the factory was a vinyl mat. In the pre-SUV days, the trunk was used to store the spare tire and carry stuff. It was a utility space. If you decide to carpet the trunk, I would recommend using indoor/outdoor carpeting, and just do the back of the seat and trunk floor. That kit looks like it even has pieces for the quarter panels. Because of the water issue tony-muscle mentioned, I'd avoid the quarters and drop offs.

I've only had the car wet once, and in fact, the vinyl mat and sound deadening stuff I have in the trunk got wet. I didn't think this was supposed to happen, as in its normal for the trunk to get wet if the car is driven in the rain?

I have a 73 coupe. I used to get a little water when washing the car. I stuck my buddy in the trunk and sprayed. It was coming from the tail light seals. replaced and no issues since.

It was common in this era for the only separation between the trunk and inside of the car was the back seat. In standard rear seat cars almost half of the full-size spare tire fit under the rear shelf right behind the rear seat back. The fold-down rear seat cars do have the separation (part of the fold-down assembly) that lays down into the trunk and require the space-saving inflatable spare tire.
