After a mis-communication last weekend with the shop management (Jason's wife had surgery and he wisely chose to take care of her, but the shop management planned on keeping it open - but never bothered to tell Jim or I), I was able to get back after the rear axle this weekend. After struggling with the pinion pre-load, I finally got that done today after taking the whole pinion back apart and making sure all of the funk was out of the yoke's splines (there was a little bit left, but surely not enough to prevent the yoke from seating all the way...). Also chased all the threads for paint and leftover funk so there won't be any binding or fastener weirdness.

Anyway, got the pinion done and the diff back together. The patterns on the teeth are spot on and it's pretty much ready to go back together. Just gotta press on the axle bearing and tap-in the outer seals, then put it all back under the car.

Here's the diff ready to check the pattern (probably got a little too crazy with the lithium grease - but oh well):

The diff and pinion together while checking the pattern (Yeah - I know it's the wrong 'Red' - so fire me ;) ):

The axles after 'blasting and painting the ends. Still gotta tap in a new wheel stud, since the previous owners snapped one off and never bothered to replace it:

And finally, everything ready to go back together on the bench before I bailed for the day:

Had a good day with the Mach 1. Finished sanding the underside of the car and started cutting out the rust on the left trunk drop off. Time to break out the welder.
We must be a strange bread concidering all the work we put into these car we haven't driven yet.

Its looking good Mike

Ain't THAT the truth.

The only time I've actually ever 'driven' mine was during the bumpy dismount from the trailer used to tow it to the shop. Even then, it was more just being a passenger - no keys (steering column locked straight), no engine (seized), and no brakes (pedal frozen solid, e-brake cable snapped). What was I thinking?! rofl

When you drive it, there will be both the enjoyment of driving a machine you saved, the thrill of the power you put into it and the pride of true ownership as opposed to just having for the next few years attitude that goes with the throw away cars.

oh and lots of burnt rubber and speeding tickets for most of you. ;)

Well changed the coil springs on friday {OOOFFFFFF:-/} and did both tie rods today. Now to wait a week for it to settle the get her aligned. Gonna be going for a spin soon hehehe. Oh and bought the tires for the new wheels should be getting those on by wednesday:D

That thing STILL blows my mind!

I don't know about a one 1 legged man in an ass kicking contest, but you can be sure a one armed Mark is going to find a way to get his Mach welded! :p

Thanks Marc.I got my Mach back in 95. Here is a pic in 98 when I was driving it daily when I lent my 89 5.0 to my mom for 2 mouths. Some guy gave her to much money for her 89 Ranger and she special ordered a new Escort. I know a special ordered Ford Escort rofl but that's what she wanted.

This time I had a rough day working on the car. I am usually fairly competent to do simple tasks, but tonight I ruined a shock absorber while putting in a MPG shock tower brace (I picked up the wrong thread nut and it is solidly jammed on with the flats on top stripped out, and to add insult to injury, the Monte Carlo bar advertised to clear even large cap distributors won't fit in any way shape or form.

I have a monte carlo bar off of a 2011 GT 500 and oddly enough it will fit and clear the distributor nicely with some minor slotting of two holes, but I will need to make a couple of small brackets for the second hole on each side of the brace to tie into the shock towers . . . if the bar will clear the plenum I have on order for the fabricated ram air set up I am going to be working on. During the trial fitting I snapped off one of the bolts that holds down the shock tower cap and of course it is on the opposite side of my damaged shock.

I put up my tools and went inside. On the plus side it is raining and not 100+ degrees.

VERY true statement!!!

That's the angle I'm going for with both myself and instilling that into my sons as they fix up their Mach1s. But not tot the speeding tickets.

Jeff,

I have (1) KYB Shock if you are interested ?

Let me know.

Thanks, Jay

Thanks Jay, I went ahead and ordered a pair as I have always changed shocks in matched pairs. KYB has changed the Gas Adjust shock recently, (though it may just be a color change) and with it being front shocks I just don't want to induce any instability. In all truth, I could probably cut the nut off, run a die over the threads and square the top back up to make the shock usable, but they are not that expensive and I was wanting to pull the springs and drop the front end a bit anyway. Now I have an excuse.

Well I drove the car into the garage and started going through my brakes..so far so good on the front side. It rained and lost power again but I have flashlights and some daylight left. I'm very happy with how well solid this car is. Sure there's some rust but its all repairable. I think the only sheet metal that needs replacing is the trunk floor. Going to start doing a lot of minor things today. Even with no power I'm just happy its not 100 outside and I'm off of work and I can work on my car.

Got back from my appointment yesterday and removed the DS seatbox I had tacked in. I had moved it back 3/4 of an inch but could still weld to the front frame edge. Just didn't like having to bend other parts to meet the floor. I'll have it back in today where it belongs.

Removed the DS seat box from yesterday and tacked it back down in it's regular spot. I realize I need two hands to be doing something this important so I moved on to changing the back seats. (See new post).

Just ordered rear window louvers from Summit racing and a pop open gas cap for the mach 1. :D Get to spend some of that money from painting that Jeep !!! Will post up some pics when i get everything installed. Maybe even enter it in the car of month section !

Adjusted the pinion angle, changed the oil and filter and adjusted the clutch. Ready for a road trip!
Good luck Jeff! Hope it works out as well as it should.

I realize this may not be the place, but I did actually go out to the garage to work on the fold down seat removal this morning. So if you fella's want to throw the flag ::eek:fftopic:: I understand but feel it qualifies.

Got out there and remembered that Bills pump part showed up (we have city water but use our old pumps to water the lawn and Bills developed a crack in the housing) and Bill waters "Zone I, II, or III" every day.

So I set out to rebuild the pump. Pump complete. Recall that Bill said it would be nice to have an easy access door to get to the pump to turn it off. (He and his wife are at a regular Dr appointment for her and the pump houses in the south are in our yards) So, since I have the wall off anyway, I'll build a door in it that a 6'-5" man with bad knees can get into very easily.

Run to hardware for hinges, handle, and latch. Get back and assemble the 2'-6" X 3'-6" I cut in the wall. My youngest tenant shows up just as I'm getting ready to take it over and install and vollunteers to carry the wall for me.

While screwing down the wall without bothering Bill and Pauline, Sky tells me that during last nights thunderstorm he was out in the shed and the wind caught 1 of the doors and ripped it off the hinges. "No problem" get done with Bill's, go over to Sky's, replace frame 2X4 and use larger screws. Wait, other door needs adjusted to let the latch work proper. Bill lives right behind and I need a drill bit. Bill spots us coming over and insists we take a break from the 95% humidity and have a beer. Ended up sending Sky to my garage to fetch the case of beer I bought while picking up pump house supplies.

Spent the night laughing at Sky answer his wifes texts (she could see us out the back window and they've only been married since February) drinking and telling stories with Sky, Bill and Paul (Paulines twin brother who lives next door and convinced those 2 to move here and rent from us). All of which have helped me in the garage at one time or another. Didn't do anything to the car and just got home. GREAT DAY ON WHAT STARTED OUT ON TO BE A CAR DAY, IN MY HUMBLE OPINION!

Great to have freinds! Sometimes, we need to just spend more time with them. :salute:
