Hooking up volt gauge , the red and yellow wires on rear of ALT gauge should I tape them up ?

Yes, They are both 'hot' all the time so they need to be insulated to prevent shorting.

Thank you, for the help. Local guy said to hook them together but I didn’t think so

Because the ammeter on these cars do not carry the full load (are a shunted circuit) there is no need to connect them together like you would have had to on older ammeters that carried the full load.

I would not just tape them with normal black electrical tape, tape has a tendency to unwind after time. I would use waterproof heat shrink that will glue to the wire and the open end glued shut.
