Well that sucks

We have always enjoyed the holidays and my wife loves to go all out and really decorate the house. On Monday ,while I was out, she decided to try and hang a Merry Christmas plack on the wall while standing on a short step ladder. As we all know, us older folks have no business being on these, especially when no one else is around. You already know whats coming, yes, she fell off. Lucky she had her cell phone by her and was able to call 911. She broke her arm at the wrist, her leg ( tibia and fibula) right below the knee and the fibula again at the ankle.

She had surgery on both her arm and leg yesterday and is doing as well as can be expected for now. She gets to go home today (insurance companies want you out if you are capable of fogging a mirror ) but is going to need a lot of assistance from me over the next few months. We are grateful that it wasn't any worse than this.

So, I'm going to take a minute and preach to everyone, but especially the older guys and gals.
STAY the heck off of ladders and if you do need to get on one make sure someone is there to steady it and if you do fall hopefully to catch or break your fall. Remember, as we get older we bounce less and break more.

That is a bummer to hear, falling injuries are horrible.

This Summer my parents were hell bent on painting their two story house- with a brush. I thought I had talked into hiring a painter, but the only two people in this world with a harder head than my own are my parents.

Both are in their 70’s.

After realizing I could not stop the madness I borrowed some scaffolding from a buddy to lessen the likelihood of a fall.

In the end they painted their entire two story house with a 4” brush. Both made it with no injuries. I made them agree to contract a painter next time.

She was on the top step of a 3 step ladder which 3.5 ft. Or, in here case, high enough to cause some major breaks.

That's the problem with use older people - it seems the older we get the thicker headed we become, and we don't want to listen to common sense. I'm 72 and my wife is 68 and neither of us would have listen to you either- lol - just kidding.

It would be so easy to get upset because of all that this is going to put us through but then I had to step back and think that we were blessed that she didn't suffer worse injuries like a broken neck or even death. So yes, I hug her and tell her it's going to be ok.

Sure hope she can make a full recovery! I broke my tibia and fibula just below my knee too. I still have the 13 screws and a couple of plates in my leg and that was 12 years ago. Hopefully she heals well with no infection. Best of luck to you both!

I am sorry to hear your wife was injured. Thank you for sharing. Lynda and I are very cautious with what we do now in our elder years, and have nomleoblem calling for and paying for help from others to do even what were once easy things to do. But, we still enjoy working on our vintAge Mustangs and Shelby together when heavy lifting is not involved.

I'm saddened to hear of your wife's accident, but thankful that it wasn't worse. I fractured my fibula near the ankle, back when I was younger, but at least I have a great story to tell (skydiving). Now, I am no longer young and immortal, so the wife tries to keep me from having so much fun that I might hurt myself. She's not always successful.

I hope your wife makes a full and quick recovery, but yes, it will take some time. She is in good hands, though.
