They even got the hood black out correct!!!!
I made sure they did and it turned out so nice. They had used the pattern from Mustang Monthly in the past that was wrong, like a ton of other guys did. So I explained to them how it was wrong, and went over the correct layout with them. They were very great about realizing how the pattern from MM was wrong and had no problem with me showing them the correct way to lay it out. 

Anyway I’m sure glad I took it to this shop. Paul and his crew are really great to work with and very knowledgeable! My car is turning out really nice, and I would recommend them to anyone. Their web site is Mustang Craftsmen .com.

Perhaps they should talk to Motortrend TV (velocity) or Discovery TV and do a TV series. Their work looks way better than some of the crap being shown on some of those series.

It's starting to make me think about redoing my hood, but matching the metallic Light Pewter would be almost impossible.

I'm looking forward to seeing it in August.

Thanks Geoff, ya they are doing a great job. I think trying to deal with the tv stuff would hinder the work and the quality. But I’m sure the money would be good! 

I was wondering the same about my color too cause it’s not a stock Ford yellow. But I had some of the original paint and the formula that was used. So it had to be pretty easy for them to match it, even though they used a different and much better paint. I think you’d be surprised at how it could be matched, but I guess the metallic would be tougher. 

I’m really looking forward to the Ford show in August.

 John, yeah a TV show would get in the way I'm sure. A really good shop wouldn't need that sort of trauma anyway.

 As for redoing my hood, it definitely would be hard on that paint even though I still have some left over. Air pressure, humidity and the way you hold your mouth all have an impact on the result. Just after the car was painted in 14, I was in the Retro-Fest cruise downtown, when a fat assed cop backed into the right rear quarter and put a 10" long scratch in it. Even though the Police paid for the damage repair and the same painter did it, it still can be seen (by my eyes). Pisses me off to this day. I should have insisted the whole car be re-painted.

So if I did the hood again now and it didn't exactly match, I'd be REALLY pissed off. For now, it'll stay the way it is, but should the car get damaged, then I'll think seriously about doing the whole car again.

Thanks bkdunha. I had them use a pic of your door sill area for reference. They didn’t realize 72-73 was different than 71. They did it like the 71, but had no problem changing it to the correct way that goes all the way up to the sill plate. And, they even said that they learned something new and thanked me!

 
Well, I guess there’s a little problem with the drivers fender. They just can’t get the gap between it and the door good. Part of it is due to the door having some work done to it in the past. But most of the problems are with the damn Taiwan parts made cheap. They did an initial test fit and it seemed ok, but when they went to do the final assembly, they just couldn’t get it to look good. So it will have to come back off and have some metal work done to it to get it right. I feel kinda bad for them, they spent over 4 hrs trying to get it to fit right, but it just won’t. It’s got to be aggravating.

The bummer thing about it is I have to pay for the metal work on it myself. Insurance won’t cover that kind of stuff because it’s an aftermarket part. I want it to look good and so does the shop, so Paul, the owner, said if I cover the labor then he would cover the repaint. I think that’s really nice of him to do that, so I told him to go ahead. John, could it just be the top inner bracket in the door opening that is too tight and needs tweaking. Would that not hold the fender closer to the door and making the gap too small?

How is the fit up front? any room for adjustment to move the whole fender (and everything else) forward 1/8th inch or whatever it needs?

Why I say this is because even though my fenders are factory, I needed to make a small tweak on those brackets to get the gaps just right, probably better than factory.

I spent hours getting the gaps right on the car I did a couple winters ago. Once I got the gaps were I wanted them, then I started the paint work. I drilled holes in the hinges and pinned them when it came time for reassembly. I did the same thing for the fenders. You can see the holes by the bolts for hinges.

I got new door hinges and a new bumper too. So they are kinda starting from scratch. Plus it wasn’t perfect at all in the first place. My old bumper was done pretty bad and the door gap was only a bit better than it is now. When they get it lined up better at the door, then the bumper doesn’t fit that great. I think the leading edge of my door is not original from before and it’s making things worse. 

They apologized and thought it was going to fit way better than it is. If this was a restoration then they would have spent way more time and made it fit totally perfect, but because of insurance they can only do so much. Plus I had a repo fender to begin with, so insurance will only pay for repo. Kinda sucks but I understand. I’m sure they will get looking better than before and if I have to pay some extra for their time, then I’m ok with that.

I guess I want to let others know about the insurance aspect of it too. The shop owner says he has to deal with this all the time.

Well. car should be ready in another week or two. Sounds like they will start engine today or tomorrow. Won't be on the road anytime soon as we are in the middle of winter. Getting about 6" of snow here today & shop where car is will probably get more.

As for the person who I was trying to avoid...karma will hopefully take care of that. :)

 
Got a few nice updates on my car. The hood locks are on, drivers fender has been refitted and everything is back on the car. Also, the engine is rebuilt and the initial 30 minute ring and cam break in has been done and went well. No failures!

The fender is not perfect, but way better than it was. It’s actually a bit better than before the accident, so I’m ok with it.

The engine just needs to go back in with a little exhaust rework to fit the headers and h-pipe. Then a front end alignment some testing to make sure everything is ok and that should be about it. It’s really looking good so far! Here’s a few more pics.602FEDED-ECEA-4DFB-9D8C-F4D78A817302.jpeg
